PROCESS OF MAKING- SEATS;

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUsrAVE F. DANIEL- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Processes of Making Seats, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to seats for agricultural field machinery and the like, and more particularly to those formed of sheet metal or like metals, and to a method of manufacture whereby a portion ofthe seat isembossed with a design, trade name or the-like and is then molded with the rest of the sheet tothe proper conformation without distort- ,ing the design already embossed thereon. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a seat blank for forming a seat that embodies features'of the invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view. of dies for embossing a design or name on a seat; Fig. 3 is a plan of an embossed seat; Fig. 4-:is a cross sectional view of dies for completing the form of the seat, and Fig. 5 is a plan of a completed seat. i
It is difiicult to emboss or press up a design, figures, letters or the like on sheet metal after the latter has been bent from a plain sheet by pressure in dies, without distorting the piece and it can only be accomplished successfully by expensive compound dies. The method herein described consists first, in cutting a blank from sheet metal and stamping thereon a design, letters, figures or the like, while it is still unformed, and then in molding the blank to the desired contour without disturbing or replacing the original designj c As herein described a blank 1 is cut out from a sheet metal blank and is given the desired outline thereby. By reference to Fig. 4, it will be observed that the die 5 is recessedto provide clearance for the characters, figures ordesign embossed uponthe rim or edge of the seat, and that the die 5 cooperates with the die ,6 in holding the rim or edge of the seat while the die 7 completes the formation of the seat, thereby preventing the rimor edge of the seat from being distorted while'the blank is being drawn to proper form.
