WINDOW-FRAME.'
Specification of Letters Iyatent.y y n yPatented,N OV, 10, 1914,
Application med october 2A, 191s. serial No. 797,051.
vshown in Letters Patent No. 1,068,149, of
July 22, 1913; and the object of the improvement is to provide a simple and strong window frame construction which has an adjustment strip for quick close fitting the resilient stops to the sash, which strip also covers the opening into the sash box, thereby presenting` a continuous smooth surface for the edge of the window sash; and the invention consists in the kcombination and arrangement of the parts as shown in the specification and the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the window frame with one sidein section to show the arrangement of the differ.- ent parts at line 1V W in Fig. 4. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the window casing and sash at line X X in Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the window casing at line Y `Y in Fig. 1, showing an elevation of the window jamb with the window sash, stops and adjustment strip removed. Fig. 4 is a crosswise sectional view of the window frame and sash at line Z Z in Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference refer to` corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the window jamb which is largely in one piece, and to which the weight box is attached by means of the pieces 11, 12 and 13 which are preferably attached to one another by means of mortise and rabbet joints so vthat the size or shape of the opening 14 withinthe weight box is fixed.
An adjustment strip 15 is provided with a lengthwise tongue and groove joint 16 between it and the jamb piece 10. The ad justment strip 15 serves a triplepurpose. It is made wider than the projection 17 be tween the grooves 18 and 19 for the sash stops 20 and 21 to which it is attached so that the edges of the strip 15 adjacent the sash stops 20 and 21 may be easily cut away in order to fit the space between the sash stops 20 and 21 to receive the window sash thereby insuring la tight joint. The adjusting strip 15 also covers the opening 23 to the weight box 14 and thereby presents a smooth continuous surface for the sash 22 to slide aga-inst. The opening 23 may have the piece 24 inserted therein or not just as desired, since the adjustment strip'15 covers the entire opening 23 and is held firmly in line bythe tongueand groove joint 16. The opening 23 yis preferably made on the lines of the projection 17 iand dotted lines extending through the jamb piece 10, as shown in Fig.- 4. It is therefore apparent that the adjustment strip" l5 performs the triple office. of'forming a convenient means for fitting the sash 22, also jfori'covering the opening 23, and for providing` a smooth continuous sliding `surface for the sashr 22.
'Ihe `sash stops 20` and 21 may be resiliently supported by the springs 25 or may extend to thebottom of the lgrooves 18 and 19 without departing from my invention. A molding 26 may be provided on theouter side of the sash box piece 1l for the trim of the brick in a brick wall or the siding of a wooden frame building. The inner edge of the jamb piece 10 may have the nishing strip 27 vwith groove 2S therein for the attachmentr of the inner wood work of the window frame, or thejamb strip 10 may extend up the full thickness thereof, as desired;
I claim as new- 1. In a window frame, a jamb piece having lengthwise grooves therein, sash stops in said grooves,v` and an adjustment strip attachedk to the projection von said jamb piece between said lengthwise grooves on said jamb piece, said adjustmentstrip being wider than said projection. ,j
2. In a window frame, a j amb piece having lengthwise grooves therein, sash stops in said grooves, an adjustment strip wider than the projection between said lengthwisey grooves in said jamb piece, and a lengthwise tongue and groove joint between said strip and projection.
3. In a window frame, a jamb piece having lengthwise grooves therein, sash stops` in said grooves, a weight boxattached to In testimony whereof I have axed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
SIDNEY L. MARKHAM.
said jamb strip, an opening to said Weight boxlengthwise of a portion of the projection between said grooves in said jamb strip, and an adjustment strip attached lengthwise of said projection between saidgrooves 'covering,` said opening, substantially as and for the purpose specified. v
