RUDOLPH r. Knorr, or TrriiRivroroLIs, wYoivrINe.
FALSE BOTTOM ron WAsHTUBs im THELIKE;
To all whom t may concern e Be it knownthat I, RUDon1 i-rl ILorr, a subject ot theGerinan Empire, residing at i Tliermopolis, in the county of` Hot Springs and State of l/Vyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inFalse Bottoms for VVashtubs and the like,` of which the following is a specilication.
`The present `invention relates `to a false bottom for washtubs and the like, and has `for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features `olf construction whereby an effective frictional contact with the` clothes is obtained and also whereby the water may be heated under the false bottom so as to maintain the same at present instance the false bottom is shown y the proper temperature. g ,A further object of the invention is to provide a falsev bottom for washtubs which is not only constructed to remove the dirt from thefclothes by friction, but also Vto strainthe dirt from the upper part ofthe Wash tub orvessel tothebottom thereof so as to keep the waterand `suds in said upper part of the tub in a clean condition.`
`With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novelcombina-` tions and arrangements "of the parts as will more fully appear as `the description proceeds, the novel features thereof; being pointed out in the appendedclaims. y y
For a full understanding of the finven-` tion, reference is to be had "to the following description and accompanying drawings, in Q which zy y y Figure l isa plan view of a false bottom constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same as arranged within an ordinary wash tub. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 oi Fig. l. Figf is a sectional view on the line 3-3 oi Fig. 1, and Fig. @L is a transverse sectional view through a modified form of the i1ivention, showing the same as "fitted within an ordinary wash tub.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character A designates the false bottom in its entirety, the said false `bottom being adapted to be removably placed in a wash tub, washing machine or the like so asto rest loosely upon the bottom thereof. In the v Specification of Letters Patent.
,Application filed ctober 3, 1913. Serial No.` 793,196.
rateateaivev. 10, 1914.
for the purpose of illustration as iitted within a wash tubl. `Thebottoln A, as shown by Figs. l` and 2, is preferably made in two substantially semicircular sections 2 2 which are loosely connected `in some suitable manner as by means of the hinged links `Eso lasto-bereadily folded upon each other when it is `desired to collapse'the false bottom. asliing machines are frequently made with a contracted top, although where the Afalse l bottom is constructed in two hinged sections,
as above indicated, no difficulty is encoun` tered in placing the same in position within thefinterior of thewashingmachine. l.
The false bottom A may be made from sheet metal or` heavy glass, the adjacent l edges of the twolsections Qf-Qithereof being loosely connected by the link members 3. Inl the present instance the' extremities of the `link members 3 are rolled to provide small sleeves which receive the rods or wires `3, the said wires or rods being similarly en `gaged at intermediate points between the links by corresponding sleeve members 3b upon the sections 2.# `This construction admits of the two sections 2-4-2 being readily folded when such becomes desirable.
Each of the sections 2 of `the `falsebottom is `provided with a plurality of independent sets of` corrugations runninglat" angles to so Y each othei. In the present instance each half 2 of the false bottom is divided into two segmental sections each oi. which is provided with a set of corrugations 4, the cor-` `rugations of each set being parallel to each other and to the radius passing through the middle of the segmental section. It will thus be obviousthat the various sets of corrugations 4 extend in different directions so that the clothes will be effectively acted upon to remove the dirt therefrom, regardless of the direction in which they are moved over the bottom. Each set of the corrugations is pro vided with the longitudinal slots 4 in the valleys or depressions betweenthe independent corrugations, and with the "perforations 4b which `extend in series along the ridges or raised portions of thecorrugations. Provision is thus made for carrying the dirt under the bottom as quicklyfas it is loosened bottom of the tub. A water space is thus' 4a and perforations 4b and thus be carried awa from the clothes.
T e invention also contemplates the `prov vision of means for heating'the water to maintain the same at the ture. For this purpose av eating coil 7 1s arranged under and carried by the false `bottom A, the said heating coil being secured to the false bottoml by suitable clips 8, and maintained out of electrical contact therewith by the insulation 9. The terminals 10 of the heating coil 7 extend to a suitable plug 11, and electric current may be su pliedto the heating coil from any suitable source.
As indicated by Fig. 2, the heating coil 7 is formed in complemental sections which are rigidly and permanently applied to the sections 2 2 of the bottom, the adjacent ends of the complemental sections being connected by coiled portions 7a of insulated wire. These coiled portions 7 a are adapted to be elongated when the false bottom `is `collapsed and contracted when the false bottom is extended or inverted for use. Provi# sion is thus made for the folding of the false bottom A,`although the operative sections of the heating coil 7 are maintained in a spaced positionv from the false bottom and out of electrical contact therewith.
A modification isv shown by Fig. 4, in which the false bottom A is constructed in one integral section, and is provided at the periphery thereof with `the upwardly pro jecting flange or sides 12. This flange 12 may be ofany desired height, and is formed with several sets of corrugations 13, corre-1k roper temperafY i sponding tothe sets of corrugations 4 of the bottom, and extending at different angles to each other. As the clothes are agitated and broughttinto contact with the corrugations 13 of the side flanges 12, the said corrugations 13 will coperate with the corrugations 4 of the bottom to act frictionally upon the clothesA and remove the dirt therefrom.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A false bottom for' wash tubs and the like, including a removable bottom platesubdivided into segmental sectionswhich radiate from a common center, each section being formed with' an independent set `of parallel corrugations which are disposed at an angle to the corrugationsfof adjacent seg-1 c through the middle of thesegmental section,`
slots being formed in the valleys ofthe corrugations which `extend substantially the full length thereof, while the crowns ofthe corrugations are each provided with a series of perforaticns. f y
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V i
