PROTECTIVE DEVICE FOR ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GILES Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Protective Device for Electrical Circuits, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve ments in protective devices for electrical circuits, the present device being automatic in actuation and particularly adapted for use in connection with a telephone circuit to protect the subscribers instrument from high tension currents, such. as caused by lightning, one object of the invention being the provision of a simple device which is readily adjustable for carrying light or heavy voltages, and in which it is adapted to be readily connected, a simple form of fuse.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a grounding device, which constitutes an adjustable medium upon which is swingingly connected a transversely or slidingly mounted carbon to coact with a stationary carbon, by means of which the air gap may be regulated and the overlapping effect of such carbons may also be adjusted.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

vided at one side with the overhanging end 5 provided with the two grooves 6 for the removable reception of the fuse F. This fuse has its lower end disposed within the guides of the bracket 8, which is connected to one side of the terminal 2' of the support, and thus provides a means for readily con necting the fuse F in circuit between the plate 4 and the bracket 8, the support insulating the plate 4 and bracket 8 so that the talking current led in through the conductor 9 will pass through the. binding post 10, the plate 4, the overhanging or projecting end 5, the fuse F, the bracket 8, the binding post 11, and the conductor 12 to the instru ment to be protected.
Seated within the recesses 33 and underlying the plate 4, is a strip 13 of carbon, the same being provided with the enlarged end 14 and the recessed intermediate portion 15, all as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
A metal plate 16 is connected to the upper surface of the base 1, between the terminals 22, and has upstanding therefrom, the socket 17 which is grooved or recessed at one side as at 18, the vertical support 19 being slidably mounted in said socket and being provided with the rib 20 which enters the slot 17 and thus assists in guiding and maintaining the support 19 in the desired adjusted position, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The upper bifurcated end 21 of the vertically adjustable member 19 has disposed therein for transverse tilting movement, the lug 22 which is pivoted at 23 and carries the supporting member 24, the same being composed of a plate having the inturned flanges 25 for introduction within the oppositely disposed grooves 26 of the carbon block 27. By this means, the block may be adjusted within the support 24 so that the underlying end thereof may be moved in varying overlapping relations as regards the opposed face of the enlarged portion 14 of the carbon 13, and by reason of the Vertical adjustment of the support 19, the air gap between the upper surface of the carbon block 27 and the projecting portion 14 of the carbon 13 may be varied.
It has been found in practice, that the greater the overlapping, the better the present device will operate with a heavy voltage, the overlapping being reduced according to the lower voltage used.
In order to limit the downward movement of the end of the plate 2 1 relatively to the enlarged portion 1a of the block 13, and to also assist in maintaining the carbon 27 so that its face will be in parallel with the face of the projecting portion 1% of the carbon block 13, an arm 28 is connected to one side of the support 19 and has its upper free end projected to engage the under side of the plate .24: to thus limit the movement of the same in that direction.
A binding post 29 is connected to the plate 16, and has led therefrom, the conductor 30 ,to the ground. By this means, it will be seen that the high tensioned current or discharge tnat would in any way destroy the subscribers instrument, will be shunted by the carbons 14 and 27 through the metal support 19, the socket 17 and the plate 16 to the ground.
There is sufficient friction between the telescopic ends of the support 19 in the socket 17 and its rib 18 to maintain the support 19 and the pivoted carbon 27 in thedesired relation so that the air gap between the respective. carbons may be malntamed, the carbon block 27 being readily adjusted transversely within the support 24,
so as to produce the desired overlapping or underlying adjustment between the two carbons.
With this form of protective device, it is evidentthat the parts are readily adjusted,
and that the present device will be automatic in its operation, and by reason of the fact that the fuse F is disposed within the cartridge 7 which may be readily interchanged when burned or otherwise injured, it is apparent that such fuse cartridge may be readily inserted between the supporting members of the present device and thus produce a protective device of this character of an exceedingly simple structure and one which due to the few numbers of parts is easily maintained and cheap to install.
What is claimed is: 1. A device of this character, including a U-shaped support of insulating material, a-
metal plate spanning the terminals thereof, one end of said plate being projected beyond the outer face of one of the terminals, a metal bracket connected to one of the terminals and disposed below the projecting end of the metal plate, a fuse disposed be tween the bracket and the projecting end of the metal plate, the metal plate, fuse and bracket constituting the path for the normal current, and two protective mediums, one of which is in electrical contact with the metal plate and the other of which is carried by the support and grounded, the latter protective medium being adjustable to and from the fixed medium and longitudinally thereof. I

A device of this character, including a U-shaped support of insulating material, a metal plate spanning the terminals thereof, one end of said plate being projected beyond the outer face of one of the terminals, a metal bracket connected to one of the terminals and disposed below the projecting endof the metal plate, a fuse disposed between the bracket and the projecting end of the metal plate, the metal plate, fuse and bracket constituting the path for the normal current, a carbon block disposed within the terminals adjacent to the under side of the metal plate, a second metal plate carried by the support, a ground connection therewith, a socket carried by the second metal plate, a metal support vertically adjustable in said socket, and a carbon block carried in the upper end of said support for movement to andfrom the carbon block.

A device of this character, including a U-shaped support of insulating material, a metal plate spanning the terminals thereof, one end of said plate being projected beyond the outer face of one of the terminals, a metal bracket connected to one of the terminals and disposed below the projecting end of the metal plate, a fuse disposed between the bracket and the projecting end of the metal plate, said metal plate, fuse and bracket constituting the path for the normal current, a carbon block disposed within the terminals adjacent to the under side of the metal plate, a second metal plate carried by the support, a ground connection therewith, a socket carried by the second metal plate, a metal support vertically adjustable in said socket, a pivoted member mounted in the upper end of the vertically adjustable support, and a carbon block mounted therein for movement to and from the fixed carbon block.
4. A device of this character, including a U-shaped support of insulating material, a metal plate spanning the terminals thereof, one end of said plate being projected beyond the outer face of one of the terminals, a metal bracket connected to one of the terminals and disposed below the projecting end of the metal plate, a fuse disposed between the bracket and the projecting end of the metal plate, said metal plate, fuse and bracket constituting the path for the normal current, a carbon block disposed within the terminals adjacent to the under side of the metal plate, a second metal plate carried by the support, a ground connection therewith, a socket carried by the second metal plate, a metal support vertically adjustable in said socket, a pivoted member mounted in the upper end of the vertically adjustable support, and a carbon block mounted therein for movement to and from the fixed carbon block, the vertically, ad-
justable carbon block being adjustable her to increase or decrease the overlapping relation thereof to the fixed carbon block.
5. A protective device of this character, including a U-shaped support of insulating material, a metal plate connected to the terminals thereof and having one end projected beyond one side of the support, said metal a plate constituting one line wire connection,
a metal bracket connected to one side of the support below the projecting end of the metal plate, a fuse disposed between the bracket and the projecting end of the metal plate and constituting the electrical connection between the two, means for connecting the current carrying wire to the bracket, whereby the path of the normal current is through the metal plate, fuse and bracket, a block of carbon mounted in the upper terminals of the support, said carbon being co-extensive with the under side of the metal plate, and a cooperating grounded block of carbon carried by the support and adjustably mounted for movement to and from and longitudinally of the fixed block.
6. A protective device of this character, including a U-shaped support of insulating material, a metal plate connected to the terminals thereof and having one end projected beyond one side of the support, said metal plate constituting one line wire connection, a metal bracket connected to one side of the support below the projecting end of the metal plate, a fuse disposed between the bracket and the projecting end of the metal plate and constituting the electrical connection between the two, means for connecting the current carrying wire to the bracket, whereby the path of the normal current is through the metal plate, fuse and bracket, a block of carbon mounted in the upper terminals of the support, said carbon being co-extensive with the under side of the metal plate and a tiltingly mounted block of carbon carried by the support and adjustably mounted for movement to and from and longitudinally of the fixed block.
