To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMANUEL J. HAoHnN- nnnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/VilcoX, in the county of Kearney and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful. lmprovementsin Cream-Arrosters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of. the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in churn structures, and is in the nature of an attachment therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide a snnple and efficient device for arrestlng the cream as the latter is splashed. throu h olce dasher strikes the cream in the body, and
thus to catch the cream immediately as the cream leaves the lid.
lVith this general object in View, and others which will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the in vention consists substantially in the novel. construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In. the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vertical dasher churn equipped with the herein described invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the cream arrester, showing more clearly its relation to the dasher rod and the lid of the churn. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the arrester removed from the dasher rod.
Referring in detail to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 10 designates the body of a vertical dasher churn of common construction, and 11 the dasher rod. This rod reciprocates through the lid 12 of the body 10, and in the working of this type of churn, the opening of the lid 12 which receives the rod 11 being slightly larger than the diameter of said rod, the cream splashes upwardly through said opening, and is deposited upon the surrounding floor. Not only is the cream thus lost, but the same is also deposited upon the clothing of the operator, so that it is highly desirable to catch this cream as it passes through the lid, and return the same to the churn body. To the accomplishment of this end an arrester 13 is provided, said arrester comprising a conical body portion 16 at the upper end of which is a receiving sleeve 15 through which the dasher rod 11 is passed. The diameter of the lower end of the body portion it is not only suflicient to cover the rod opening in the churn lid 12, but it is also sufliciently great to eX- tend over the usual cavity or depression found in the churn lid, and which surrounds said opening, and by reason of this, the cream as it strikes the inner surface of the conical body It is caused to pass down the latter, and be received by said cavity or depression, and returns from the latter through the rod opening to the body of the churn.
That the herein described arrester' may more effectually perform its function, the same is adjustably mounted upon and works with the dasher rod as the: latter reciprocates in the churn, and for this purpose a thumb screw 16, or its equivalent, engages a screw-threaded enlargement 17 carried by the sleeve 15, the inner end of said screw 16 impinging against a contactfinger 18 ar ranged at the inner side of said. sleeve.
fastened, as by soldering, to the inner side of the sleeve 15, its lower end being free, and said finger is formed preferably [of resilient material, so that the finger is in the nature of a spring. Hence, it opposes the inward movement of the thumb-screw, and is forced by the latter into engagement with the dasher rod 11. The contact finger 18prerents the screw 16 engaging directly the dasher rod, so that this rod is protected against injury by the repeated application of the arrester to the dasher rod, and the necessary tightening and loosening of the thumbscrew in adjusting the arrester on the rod, and in such adjustment the arrester may be slid along the rod with perfect freedom, after the screw 16 has been loosened, the spring 1.8 being interposed between the end of said screw and said rod.
The upper end. of the contact finger 18 is suitably In the use of the herein described device, after it has been applied to the dasher rod. the same is slid down the rod until the lower end of the body 14 is approximately onehalf inch from the lid 12 when the dasher strikes the cream within the body 10. In such position the cream which splashes up through the lid 12 is caught by the conical body portion 14, and thus prevented discharging over the edges of the churn body. The arrester moves up and down in accordance with the vertical reciprocation of the dasher rod, and upon its approach to the lid 12 the cream is caught in the manner described. As the cream falls from the conical body 14, it is deposited upon the lid 12, and returns through the rod opening thereof to the body of the churn, and if it be desired to change the position of the arrester on the dasher red, the thumb-screw 16 is loosened, and the arrester moved to the desired position in which it may be again fastened by causing the contact finger 18 to impinge against the dasher rod by tightening said screw 16.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
,1. The combination with the dasher rod of a churn, and the churn lid through which the rod reciprocates, of a cream arrester carried by said rod and adapted to be brought thereby into proximity to said lid, whereby to catch the cream as the latter splashes through the lid, said arrester including a conical body and a receiving sleeve, and means carried by said sleeve for adjustably connecting the arrester t0 the dasher rod.
2. The combination with the dasher rod of a churn, and the churn lid through which said rod reciprocates, of a cream arrester carried by said rod and adapted to be brought thereby into proximity to said lid, whereby to catch the cream as the latter splashes through the lid, said arrester including a conical body and a receiving sleeve, a contact finger arranged in said carried by said rod and adapted to be brought thereby into proximity with said lid, whereby to catch the cream as the latter splashes through the lid, said arrester including a body and a receiving sleeve associated therewith, a contact finger arranged in said sleeve for engagement with the dasher rod, one end of said finger being attached to the receiving sleeve and its other end free, and an adjusting screw threadably mounted in said sleeve and adapted to impinge against said contact finger for causing the latter to engage the dasher rod.

A11 attachment for churn dashers, comprising a body adapted to receive the cream as the latter splashes from the churn body, a receiving sleeve associated with said body through which the dasher rod passes, a contact finger arranged within the attachment for engagement with the dasher rod, and an actuating device for engaging the contact finger with said rod. i
5. An attachment for churn dashers, comprising a conical body adapted to receive the cream as the latter splashes from the churn body, a receiving sleeve associated with said body through which the dasher rod passes, a resilient contact finger arranged within the attachment for engagement with the dasher rod, and an adjusting screw threadably mounted in said sleeve and adapted to impinge against said contactfinger for causing the latter to engage the dasher rod.
