In operation the switch is shifted from its neutral position until the knives engage the terminals or contacts 2 whereupon the current passes from the feed wires to the terminals 10, condoctors 12, knives or switch arms 5 terminals 2, conductor 1% and terminals 11. After the motor has been started; that is has-developed its normal speed, the movable switch member 4 is moved from its position shown in Fig. 4 toward and beyond its neutral position to carry the arms or knives 6 into engagement with the contacts or terminals 8. whereupon the current passes from the serv ice wires to the terminals 10, conductors 12, switch arms 6, terminals 3. iuses 13 and the terminals 11.
Mechanism or means is provided for'preventing movement of the switch member i from its neutral position into a position in which the knives or arms 6 engage the terminals 3. for the purpose of avoiding burni'ng out of the fuses 13 connected to saidv terminals 3, by the excessive rush of current which occurs when the motor is started said mechanism being automaticalh shiftable out of operative position after the movable switch member -i has been moved forwardly to carry the knives 5 into complete engagement with the terminals 2 and permitted to be acted upon by the returning spring 16. As here shown, said mechanism includes an element arranged in the path of movement of the shank of the switch member 4 to prevent movement of said member rearwardly to carry the knives 6 OUMPANY,
member forwardly into engagement with the terminals 3; said element beingautomatically movable by the shank 4: out of the path of the shank after completing its forward movement; and usually said mechanism. includes a detent 17 and means for moving the detent out of position including an element 18 projecting into the path of the shank i oi": the memher 4 to be engaged thereby when the switch member is moved forwardly from its neutral position, to engage the knives with the contacts 2, the element 18being designed to ratchet from one side of the shank to the other side thereof as the knives 5 complete engagement with the terminals 2 so that said element 18 is in position to be carried by the shank i of the member 4 into engagement with the detent 1'7 and move the detent out of operative position when the switch member 4- is being moved in a retrograde direction by the spring 16 to carry the knives 6 into the contact or terminals 3.
As here shown, the shanlr 4* of the noon able switch member l projects through a slot 19 in a cap 20 of aboX 7, and the detent 17 and element 18 are pivoted to a bearing 21 depending from the inner face of said cap 20 at one side of the slot, the parts 17 and 18 having a common pivot. The detent it? is angular in form and pivoted at its angle, one arm thereof carrying a hook shaped shoulder 22 normally arranged'in the path of the shank P oi the switch member 4: and the other arm. thereor being connected by a spring 23 to a lug 2i depending from the inner face of the cap 20, the
spring 23 serving to normally hold the c etent 17 in its operative position and to re-- turn the same to its operative position.
The element 18 is an arm or lever projecting across the slot lir and into the path of movement of the shank of the switch,

In operation, the switch member isnormolly in its neutral position with itssllanlr l interposcd between the detent 17 and the lever 18 as seen in Figs. 1, 3. :1 and 8.
Upon the forward movement of the switch member the shank thereof engages the lever 18 moving the same on its pivot 21 until the knives 5 complete their engagement with the Contact 2 whereupon the lever 18 ratchets or is moved by its spring 25 as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. .5, the spring 25 moving the lever 18 to its normal position. the movement of the lever forwardly is against the action of the returning spring 16 and the operator holds the switch memher with the lmives 5 engaging with the contacts 9:" until the motor develops approximately full speed, whereupon the operator releases the switch member e and said switch member is moved rearwerdly by the spring 16, the shank thereof engaging the lever 18 and moving the same'nntil the shoulder 18 thereof engages the detect 1?, the lever 18 thus pushing the detent 17 out of the path of the switch member 4* as shown in Fig. 6. After the switch has been moved rearwerdly, the parts 17 and 18 are returned by their springs 93 and 2:3 to the r norms positions.
