The resilient member shown in Fig. 9 is arranged on the tubular support 19, and the said member comprises a pair of coils 21 a rrangcd co-axially with each other, and spaced apart at their inner ends. The resilient member is formed from a single rod or wire, which is first bent to form a cross bar having at each end an eye or bearing 23, and each end of the spring is then bent to form the coil 21, the said coil being offset laterally from the cross bar and connected thereto aportion 2% extending at right angles to the aXis of the coils. Each extremity of the rod or wire is bent upwardly at right angles to the portions as indicated at 25. and at the free end of each of the said portions the rod or wire is bent into a substantially rectangular form to form a finger piece 26. The coils 521 are arranged on the tubular support 19, and the portions 25 of the spring are adapted to em gage the teeth 13 or the body 10 of the movable portion of the holder. The brush 27 is supported by a slide comprising a plate 28 having at-each end an inwardly extending flange 29 which overlies the adjacent face of the plate in spaced relation. The plate is also provided with an inwardly extending struck up lug 30, the said lug extending in the same direction as the flanges 29, and the free end of the lug is provided with an upstanding rib or flange 30. The plate is provided with an internally threaded opening 31 below the lug 3030", for engagement by the threaded portion of a set screw 32. The brush 27 is provided with an opening through which the set screw extends, and the inner end of the screw engages the threaded opening 31 of the slide. The slide may be engaged with the movable portion of the holder from above. the flanges 29 of the slide engaging behind the flanges 15 of the wings 11 and 11 The stops 16 limit the down ard movement of the slide. The upper end of the brush is flush with the upper edge of the slide, and a contact member comprising a spilt washer 33 and an integral socket 3-1: is held to the brush. by the set screw, the set screw having an annular rib 35 for engaging the washer.
The washer is slipped over the threaded portion of the set screw, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, and by means of the said screw the contact member is clamped to the brush and the brush to the slide. The lower end of the brush is shaped to fit the commutator 3, and the resilient member shown in Fig. 9 is connected to the slide in such manner that the said resilient member acts to press the brush toward the commutator.
The spring is connected to the brush by means of a substantially S-shaped connector shown in Fig. 7. The said connector coinpl'ises a plate 37 having at its upper end a 100k 38, and at its lower end a pair of spaced open bearings 39. The body of the plate is cut away between the bearings as shown at 40, and the opposite end of the plate is notched or recessed, as shown at 41. A shaft 4-2 is passed through the eyes 23 of the spring, and through the bearings 3-9 of the connector, to connect the said connector with the spring, and the upper end or hoolt 38 of the connector is engaged with the lug 30. The cut away portion 4-1 engages the lug, and the depondingportions at each end of the cut away portion engage the opposite side edges of the lug to prevent lateral movement of the connector. The body 2 the fixed portion ot'thc holder is provided with a threaded opening at approximately its ceuter, and a connector comprising a split washer 4:3 and an integral socket 4-1: is held to the body, by means of the set screw shown in Figs. 1, 9 and 3. .A- flexible insulated conductor 46 has one end held in the socket 34, and the other end in the socket 44-, thus connecting the brush directly with the body of the fixed portion of the holder. The usual supporting stud or rod for the brush holder is'passed through the registering openings 5, and the set screw 9 is threaded into engagement with the said rod or stud, to prevent angular movement of the holder with respect: to the said stud or rod.
In operation. he fixed portion of the holder is arranged on the stud or rod, and. the set screw 9 is turned to clamp the fixed portion of the holder to the said stud or rod. By loosening the nuts 18 the movable portion of the holder comprising the body 10 and, the wings l1 and 11 may be adjusted vertically, and may he held in adjusted position by tightening the said nuts. The slot. 8 permit considerable adjustment without disturbing the relative arrangement of the resilient member, its tubular support, or the connector. The slide to which the brush is connected moves on the guides or ways 15 ot the m vahle portion of the suppo t. and the tension of the spring may be varied, by ere gaging the portions of the spring with different teeth of the series 13. The spring acts at all times to press the bodytoward the commutator bars with the proper degree a of tension, and the wear of the brush will be uniform and even.

commutator brush holder, comprising a fixed .Incmber having a transverse opening for receiving a supportingstud tor theholdcr. a set screw threaded through the fixed member and adapted to engage the stud. and a movable section movable vertically with respect to the fixed section, said sections having engaging ribs and grooves for constraining them. to hold a definite during ad ustment. means for clamping the sections ioge her. the fixed section having oppositely i urged outwardly extending guides or ways, and having a stop at the lower end l of each guide or iorted for free sliding 1noveway. a guide member for the brush having means for detachably sccuring a brush thereto. said guide member having overlying llanges for engaging behind the guides. the guide member being mounted to slide toward and from the connnutator bars. a resilient member sup ported by the movable sections of the holder adjacent to the guide member. means for varying the tension of the said resilient member. the resilient member normally acting to force the guide member toward the con'inmtator bars, the guide member having a threaded opening, and a set screw passing through the brush and engaging the opening. a connector held to the brush by the said screw, a connector held detachably on the body of the fixed sections. and an insulated conductor connecting the two connectors.

A eomn'lutator brush holder, comprising a fixed member having a transverse opening for receiving a supporting stud for the holder, :1 set screw threaded through the fixed member and adapted to engage the stud, and a movable cally with respect to the fixed section, said sections having engaging ribs and grooves for constraining them to hold a definite position with respect to each other during adjustment. means for clamping the sections together, the fixed section having oppositely arranged outwardly extending guides or uavs. and having a stop at the lower end of each guide or way, a guide member for the brush having means for detachably securing a brush thereto, said guide member having overlying flanges for en gaging behind the guides. the guide member being mounted to slide toward and from the commutator bars. a resilient member sup ported between the side members adjacent to the guide member, means for varying the tension of the said resilient member, a connection between the resilient member and the guide member, the resilient member normally acting to force the guide member toward the commutator bars,
