To all whom it may concern f Be it known that Minn MATOS, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire Alarm Systems, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fire alarm systems.
An object of the invention is the provision of a means readily located at different parts' of the room or building and adapted upon ignition to cause the closing of an electric switch, automatically ringing a bell and lighting a lamp. x
A further ob'ect is to provide a circuit closer explosively operated and in communication with a` fuse member arranged within a room or a building while the closing of the circuit actuates an alarm bell or supplies current to an electric lamp or both as desired.
A still further object is the provision of an explosively operated circuit closer having an automatic lock for retaining the circuit closed until the lock is manually operated for releasing a circuit closing member.
\Vhile the general objects of the invention are those above set forth and are broadly to provide a more serviceable instantaneous detector of tires within a buildinga-nd the indication of the occurrence thereof at distant points, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference char- -aoters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views z-Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of the alarm device showing the circuit closer in its open position. Fig. 2 illustrates the de vice in use in a room inconnection with a signal bell and lamp, and, Fig. 3 is .a fragmentary view of the device showing the circuit closer as locked in its closed position.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it being noted that it is desired to indicate by the lighting of a lamp and the ringing of a bell, in the event of a lire at any 4point within the building, a room structure 10 is illustrated in Fig. 2 having a fuse member tioned wherever desired upon the walls, ioor, and ceiling thereof and communicating at one end with a circuit closer contained in the box l2, while the circuit wires 13 and 14 extend away from the box having a battery 15 or any other source of electrical supply in circuit therewith as well as an alarm bell 16, an incandescent lamp 17, which bell and lamp are controlled by similar knife switches 18 and 19. The circuit wires 13 and 14 pass to the interior of the box l2 and are secured by similar binding posts 20 to the plates 21 of V-sha-ped sockets 22, which sockets thereby furnish the two terminals for the circuit. A cross-head 23 is provided with a plate having its opposite ends in the form of plugs 25 adapted for reception within said sockets 22 and at all times positioned in alinement therewith. A bolt 26 is carried by the cross head 23 substantially centrally thereof and extends through a perforation 27 in the adjacent side of the box 12 while a helical spring 28 encircles said bolt between the cross head plate 24 and a reinforcing plate 29 interiorly positioned upon said box side and through which plate also, the bolt slidingly extends.
Guide rods 30 are secured between the cross head 23, and a rear head 31 while at the same time being longitudinally slidable through one or more brace bars extending transversely between the opposite sides of the box 12. An explosive container or cannon 33 is mounted within the box as upon the bracket 34, and has the plug 35 mounted in and projecting from the mouth thereof, which serves the function of the bullet or projectile, and is rigidly secured substan* tially centrally of the rear head 31. A wall 36 of the box is provided with a port 37 closed by a hinge member 38 for the purpose of having access to the screw form of breech plug 89 and whereby a powder charge 40 may be placed within the cannon. An insulating tube 41 conducts the fuse 11 through the box and one side of the cannon to a point in contact with the powder or other explosive within the latter. Inwardly swinging arms 42 are pivoted within the box to the opposite blocks 43 and are connected a165 ure at any point il@ where the fuse 11 is located, it is apparent thatfthe samewill be fired/and will very lrapidly communicate the fire for the entire Y bers 25 within the sockets 22. Such operation will compress the spring 28 and having released the notched ends 48 of the arms 42, the compression spring 44 brings said ends closer Vtogether and in locked position back of the cross head 23 as shown in Fig. 3L 'The circuit having been thus closed by the plate 24 and its terminal plugs 25 between the circuitlcontacts 22, it will be seen that the circuit being closed, the
source of electrical supply 15 will supply Current which will ring the bell 16 in the event that the switch 18 is closed and also will light the incandescent lamp 17 if the switch 19 is in closed position, thus giving the alarm that a fire is in progress at a distant point. Angular arms 49 are pivoted to said arms 42 and at points 50 to the box,
, and are provided upon their exterior ends with slots 51 receiving pins 52 of laterallyslidable arm members 53. Said arm members 53 are slotted as at .54 for receiving stationary bolt-mounting members"55 and have terminal handles 56 whereby a sliding of the arm members 53 inwardly when` in' the position shown in Fig. 3 exerts 'an outward pull upon the arms 42 against the action of the spring 44 'and thereby allows `vthe spring 28 to disengage the contact of the circuit closer and open the same to the position shown in Fig. 1,- whereupon the cross head 23 is engaged by the end notches 4.8- of the arms 42 and there retained until the cannon is again re-loaded and exploded upon a succeeding occurrence of fire.
` While only one bell alarm and one light signal may be employed in an entire building, it is advisable that a separate circuit closer and box' as well as its operating fuse be located in each and every room of the building, burning form of fuse is advantageous in communicating a spark to touch oi" the cannon as near .as possible to the instant that the fuse is started by the fire in the apartment.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing' from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forthin the appended claims.

2. A device of the class described comprising a circuit closer normally open, a head upon one member of said circuit closer, a plug secured to said head, a cannon, said plug adapted for entrance within the mouth of said cannon when the circuit closer is open, a fuse leading from a distance and entering said cannon, swinging arms adapted for engagement by said head, a resilient member betweensaid arms, said arms adapted for seating rearwardly of said head upon the firing of said cannon and the closing of the circuit closer, pivoted angular arms pivoted to said swinging arms, and laterally approaching slidable levers linked to the free ends of said angular arms and adapted upon inward movement to disengage said swinging arms from said head.
