To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in. the county of YVorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Glosers, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawing, is a specifica tion.
My invention relates to door closers and more particularly to a form of door closer adapted to close a door in the ordinary manner when: acting normally, but adapted also to hold the door positively open when desired. 1 v i a There are some doors which it is desirable to provide with some means for keeping them normally closed but which may also be used to hold them open at times. This is true of some doors in theater buildings, for instance. These doors when equipped with such controlling means will close a utomatically after the entrance of each person, but after the performance the controlling means may be adjusted to hold the door positively open while the theater is being emptied. In such cases the controlling mechanism should hold the door positively open so that it may not start to close auto matically by reason of its being jarred or pushed by persons passing through the doorway.
The object of the invention is to provide a form of door controlling mechanism which shall attain these results.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 a view of an open door equipped with door controlling mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is another view of the door and controlling mechanism shown in Fig. 1: Fig. 3 is a plan view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the controlling mechanism; and Fig. 5 is a view showing a different adjustment of the latch used for holding the door positively open.

The form of the invention shown in the drawing includes an ordinary form of spring door check 1 mounted on a bracket Application filed November 7, 1913.

When the door is open, the tendency of the spring within the casing of the door check is to 1'0 tate the arm/l so as to close the door.

The upper end of the latch 8 is beveled so that, when the door is opened, the arm will strike its beveled surface,:l?'o1'ce the latch downwardly out of its path and pass beyond it. The spring 10 will then force the latch upwardly again so as to prevent a return movement oi? the arm land thus hold the door positively open. A chain 11 hanging from the loweuend of the latch 8 may be used to withdraw the latch from the path of the arm 4: when it is desired to close the door, the door being closed automatically by the door check after the latch has been thus withdrawn.
The latch support 9 is provided with a slot 12 through which projects a pin .13 carried by the latch 8, this pin 13 striking against the ends of the slot 12 to limit the movement of the latch. A lever 14 is pivotedto the outer end of the pin 13, the end of the lever pivoted to the pin being extended to form a cam 15. When the lever 14 is turned into a vertical position as shown in Fig. 5, its cam end 15 strikes a flange 16 on the latch guide 9 so as to force the latch 8 downwardly out of the path of the arm 1. \Vhen the latch 8 is held in this position, the door check will, of course, tend to keep the door closed at all times. When it is desired to hold the door open, the lever 14: is turned to a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4, thus carrying its cam end 15 out of engagement with the flange 16 and allowin the latch 8 to be raised into position to hold scribed. Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. Door controlling mechanism including a movable member for closing a door, yielding means for moving said member to close the door, and a latch movable into the path of said movable member positively to prevent closing of the door.
2. Door controlling mechanism including a swinging arm for closing a door, yielding means for swinging the arm to close the door, a latch, and yielding meanstending to hold said latch in the path of the arnnsaidfllatch being formed to act positively toprevent closing of the door.
3. Door controlling meehanism including a bracket, a casing mounted upon one side of the bracket, a swinging arm carried by the casing and arranged for connection with a door, a spring within the casing tending to swingthe arm to close the door, and a latch slidably mounted upon the other side of the bracket to move into and out ot-the path of the arm. i o
4. As an article of manufacture a. door check bracket constructed tosupport a door check having a swinging arm for closing a door, and a latch mounted on said bracketto move into and out of the path of said swingingarnn a V 5.
