This invention relates to power transmission'devices. f f
yThe object of the inventionis the provision of mechanism of this character which is'capable of driving twoy machines at various .relative speeds. kThe invention consists in thenovel construction and adaptation ofparts, aswill be hereinafter described and claime 1 In the accompanying drawings, Figurel 1 is a plan view with parts shown-in section of an embodiment of our invention applied to the prime movers of a kinetoscope and graphophone. Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a motor which is employed for rotating a disk wheel 6 at suitable speed. Disposed transversely with respect to the axis of said wheel are axially alined shafts 7 and 8py which are journaled in bearing-boxes 9 and are secured against endwise movements in any suitable manner as, for example, by means of set collars 10 which are juxtaposed with the ends of the boxes. The shaft 7 is operatively connected with the arbor 11 of a graphophone, indicated by 12, through the medium of an endless belt 13 passing about the driving and driven pulleys 14 and v 15, respectively provided on the referred to shaft and the arbor. As illustrated, the other shaft, 8, constitutes the arbor for the spool 16 whereupony is'wound the film 17 of a moving-picture machine. The manner of connecting the aforesaid shafts with the respective machines may, however, be varied and forms no part of the present invention.
The shafts 7 and 8 are each provided with a key-way 18 to receive feathers 19 provided within the hubs 20 and 21 of 'frictionpinions 22l and 23 which are mounted upon the respective shafts. `The operation of the invention is as follows: -Vhen the .wheel 6 is rotated the friction'pinions 22' and 23 are driven thereby at speeds proportional to the distances of the same from the axis of the driving wheel. Should the pinions`r be at equal distances from the wheel-center they would obviously be both rotated at the same speed. Such f speed may, however, be varied relatively to l.the driving wheely by causing the pinions to approach or be furtherinoved from each other.
Such regulation of the pinions is accomplished through the .medium of the screw-shaft 31 which,.-upon being properly rotated, will impart motion to the nuts 30 t which, in turn, cause the associated pinioncarrying levers to be opened or closed with respect to each other, in a manner corresponding to the action of the members of a pair of scissors. When the pinions are to be driven at different speeds they are shifted upon their `respective shafts so tha+V thc pinion which is to lhave the greater speed will be presented in closer proximity upon the latter `is swung by the operator in one lateral direction or the other resulting in the pinions being swung in a contrary direction diametrically across the face of the wheel G. The devices thus influenced may then be secured in adjusted position by clamping the arm 32 to the frame by means of the handle 39.
From the foregoing, it is evident that the speeds of the shafts 7 and S may be changed with respect to the driving wheel but un varied with respect to each other by regulating the separation of the pinions through the agency ofthe screw-shaft 3l; while the speeds of the referred to shafts may be varied with respect to each other by shifting said pinions through the agency of the lever arm 32, the pinions being both moved in thevsame axial direction.
In the application of the invention for use with a kinetoscope and sound producing instrument, it is .apparent that the operator can readily reduce or accelerate the speeds of the two instruments in unison or may alter their speeds to compensate foror correct any differences in register therebedisk only.
2. In apparatus of the class described, the combination of two driven elements, a single driving element therefor, means for regulating the relative positions of the driven elements to vary the speed ratios thereof, and means for regulating the positions of the driven elements with respect to the driving element to vary the speed of the driven elements without disturbing the selected speed ratios thereof.
