Description
@este can,
Roncero. L-ova'or AUGUSTA, MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 111,553, dated February 7, 1&71.
IMPROVEMENT iN CARPENTERS WORK-BENCHES.
The Schedule referred to, in these Letters Patent and making part of the lsame.
To lall whom it may concern: n
Be it-known that I, ROBERT C. LOVE, of Augusta, in the countyof Kenebec and State of Maine, have 4invented a r new and useful useful Improvement in Bench-Slides for Carpenters and Joiners; andI do,
hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof sutlicient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention'appertains to fully understand and to make reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which.-
' Figure 1 is a sideelevation, showing my improved slide applied to a bench. j
Figure 2 is a vertical section, the plane ot' which is indicated by the. line :v a: in ig. l.
'lhe subject of this invention is a slide applied to the side of a work-bench, and made adjustable in vertical slots therein, for supporting and securing boards edgewise when it is desired to plane or joint them on the edges.
Theinvention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combinationof parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Alteferringlto the drawing, wherein similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures- A represents abroad, strong strip, preferably made of hardjwood, and of any desired length, according to that of the bench, and'of the lumber usually employed bythe carpenter' o r joiner in his manufactures. In the front side of the -bench are vertical slots, 'a a, protected' ,on the outside by escutcheons, b b, of
metal, set iii'il'nshwith the outer surface of the side of the bench'.
vOn theinsidejn'e secured slotted plates orescutchcons, c c, which are provided with Bauges at the sides,
and are made gradually thicker from the top toward thcbottom, asshown in ig. 2, for a purpose to be hereinafter stated. o
The Slide A is secured to the bench by means of screws, l (l, which pass through holes in the slide, and through the slots a in the bench, and are fastened by nuts, e e, fitted between the flanges on the plates c c, whereby they are prevented from turning.'
These screws also pass through and are counterand use the same,
sunk in ',washers, fj, situated 011 the outside of the strip or slide. I' prefer to use. as the fastening-screws (l il, tliosc which are turned by an ordinary screwdriver.
. The object in making the escutcheons c c tapering in thickness is topreventthe slide from falling snddenly when the screws are loosened. Instead of this provision, or as anxiliaryto it, I employ springs, g y, secured to the back of the slide, the ends bearing against the bench, and timekeeping the nuts c in close contact with'the plates c c.'
To retain the lumber in place ou the slide I have provided a swinging button, 71., secured by a countersunk screw and nut to the slide, and capable of horizontal adjustment by means of a slot i. This button can stand as shown in lig. 1, or at an angle, or turned down entirely ont of the way. "It is xed in position by tightening the screw. which fastens it to the slide. It a vise is not used, a second fastening-button may be applied in its place.
To use my slide, it is adjusted vertically according to the width ofthe board to be planed or jointed, and the latter is then placededgewise on the slide, and there' retained by a proper adjustment of the button.
Having thus described lny invention,
IVliat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
i. The combination ot' the slide A, slotted bench andescutcheons, the screws ll @washers f, nuts e, and the means herein described for preventing the slide from falling too suddenly, all constructed, arranged, and operating .substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the vertical adjustable slide A, the horizontally-adjustable and swinging butt-01174,.
secured by a screw and nut so as to be retained in position when adjusted, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT C. LOVE. Witnesses C. W. HARDY, 1t. M. MANsUR.
