T0 all whom t mag/concern Be it known that I,` OLLrn L. STUART, a citizen of the `United States, residing ;at Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Closures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bag closures.

The object of the invention is to provide a bag of such constructionthat the forcing from its place of a rope, twine or the like wrapped around to gather together the mouth of the bag, by the pressure or shifting of the contents of a bag may be prevented.

A further object of the invention is to provide a bag closure of a form which shall not interfere with the filling or emptying of a bag, and which requires no special secur ing device to effect a closure, but shall permit the use of an ordinary tie rope, twine or the like, and which shall insure a perfect and permanent closure by the use of such tie.

l/Vith these objects in view the invention consists essentially of a bag of flexible material such as canvas, jute or the like, having at or adjacent to the neck thereof outside the point where the tie is to be applied, a pipe or other inclosure and a rope or similar article arranged in the inclosure in order `that bulk may be given to the mouth of the bagsufiicient to prevent slipping over the same of a tie applied in the usual manner.

The invention consists further of a bag of flexible material having secured around its neck at or near the mouth thereof, a rope or the like, in combination with a tie applied betweensuch rope and the contents of a bag.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which;

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mouth of a bag having my improved construction, the mouth being shown as separated from the body of a bag; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through one side of the mouth of the bag; and, Fig. 3 is a side View of a portion of a filled bag having my improved construction applied thereto, the bag being shown as secured by a tie applied between the mouth of the bag `and the filled portion thereof.

In accordance with the embodiment of my invention herein shown I form a bead 0r protuberanceQ at a point outside of that at which a tie is ordinarily applied, and which shall be of sufficient size that when the mouth of the bag is gathered together and the tie applied it will effectively prevent slipping `of the tie from the bag. The bead may be formed `in` any suitable way. As hereln shown 1t consists of a pipe formed by folding the edge 3 of the moutlrof the bag t back upon the bagand by securing the same by sewing or otherwise. The edge of the mouth of the bag is preferably folded inward and then secured in place, in order that its disengagement by rubbing against adjacent bags or other objects in storlng` shipping or handling may be prevented. which will form when in place a protuberanco sufficiently large to interfere with and prevent the slipping from the end of a bag` of the rope or the like 5 tied around the outside of the bag between a point reached by the contents thereof and the mouth. when the bag, after having been filled has its mouth end gathered closely together and has l such a tie applied thereto. A conveniently applied and cheap material for forming thc desired enlargement around the end of the bag is a section of cotton, hemp or other rope of a length to extend entirely around the mouth of the bag.` In order to prevent displacement of the rope, whenemployed,

the ends thereof may if desired be joined.

`The pipe formed as herein described exl tends entirely around the bag, and is closed throughout thus covering the rope or other inclosed body for its entire length, leaving t no opening liable to be engaged by an object with which a filled and tied bag may be brought into contact.

Experience has shown in4 a very large majority of instances, that whena bag containing cement, flour, grain or the like and having its neck secured by the ordinary tie rope or string, is found with its mouth un? secured after handling `or shipping, the knot or fastening of the tierope remains intact,

showing that it has been slipped from the Cut bag by pressure or shifting of the contents of the It is, however', desirable by reason of cheapness and ease of application to maintain the tie rope or string as a fastening.

From the foregoing ldescription of my invention it will be obvious that When a cloth orother flexible bag having,` my invention applied thereto is filled with material such as cement, nour, grain or the like and has the usual rope or other similar tie applied to the neck which has been previously gathered as usual, the forcing` of the tie from the neck of the bag by the pressure or movement of the contents of the bag by reason of the shifting thereof due to handling or to jarring incident to shipping, Will be effectively prevented.

While have particularly described one form in which my invention may be embodied, it Will be understood that I by no l means intend to limit the scope thereof to 1 any specific construction.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l.v A bag closure comprising a pipe eX- tending around the neck of a bag, a sepj arate body locatedin the pipe and forming a bead or protuberance, and a rope or string encircling the bag between the bead or protuberance and the body of the bag..

2. A bag closure comprising a bag having; the outer edge of the mouth thereof turned inward and secured to the inner face of the bag, a rope or the like covered by such in- 'turned edge forming a bead, and a' tie rope or string` encircling the bag between the l bead and the body of the bag.
