Specification of Letters Patent. il i 113 1914.
Application medaanuary 10,191'3. semiNames.`
T0 all whom it may concern:` y s Be it known that I, JAMESv A. SHARP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact specification.
My invention relates to grain binders, `and in particular to an improved stop dog mecha part of a grain binder having my invention embodied in the construction thereof.
1 represents the end member of the binder frame, 2 the lower arm, having the needle shaft 3 journaled therein, and 4; represents` laterally extending ear members integral with said arm and having the compressor shaft 5 journaled thereon.
6 represents the trip arm at one end of a trip shaft (not shown), and 7 represents the clutch tripping arm at the opposite end of the shaft that is in engagement with the clutch pawl 8. l s s i 9 represents the knotter actuatingshaft having the cam gear wheel 10 secured there-v to, and 11 represents the pitman connecting the cam gear with the crank arm 12 of the needle shaft 3.
Carried by one end of the compressor shaft 5 is the usual compressing arm 13, and
secured to the opposite end of said shaftis an arm 14.
15 represents a common form of cam integral with the wheel 10, 16 a lever pivotally mounted upon the binder frame and having a roller 17 journaled upon one end thereof and adapted to engage with the cam 15, and 18 represents a link connection between the opposite end of said lever and the arm 14.
All of the parts as enumerated above are common in the class of machines indicated and are not of my invention.
In the operation of machines of this vcharacter it is usual to provide means for turning the cam wheel a little beyond the limit imparted to it by the driving mechanism,
rand for that-'purpose a springfpressed dog is frequently used that engages with va cam surface 1.1poirr`the` cam wheelin a manner to turn it beyond its limit and to resist aretrograde movement thereof. v`In my invention the arm 14 is provided with a bracket y member 19, that includes a barrel-like member20 arranged at right angles with theaXis of the compression shaft, having a plunger `21 slidably mounted' therein, "said plunger beingvprovided with a reduced portion that s receives a compression spring 22, operative between one end' of the'barrel portion and the plunger in a manner to project the plungerbeyond the opposite ,end of the barrel, whereby it will contact with a fixed part of the frame ofthe machine -`and yieldingly lrock the compressor shaft and, through the pitman 4connection between the arm Hand fthelever 16, bring the cam gear wheel 10 to its position of rest at the end of the operative movement thereof.
7While I have described in this application one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it is, of course, to be understood that the form shown herein is used for purposes of illustration and may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention. l g l Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
sof
l. A grain binder having, in combination,
a `compressor mechanism including a rock shaft, "a rotatable member connected with said shaft and adapted to rock it in a compressing direction, and` yielding means for rocking said shaft in an opposite direction and controlling an angular movement of s said rotatable member at a predetermined part thereof. s
`2. A grain binder having, in combination, a main frame, a compressor mechanism includingwa rotatable cam gear and a rock shaft, an operative connection between said `gear and said shaft, and a spring mechanism for rocking said shaft in a direction `controlling an angular movement of said gear at a predetermined part thereof.
3. A. grain binder having, in combination, a main frame, a compressor mechanism including a rotatable cam gear and a rock shaft, an operative connection between said gear and said shaft, and a spring mechanism carried by said shaft for rocking said shaft in a direction controlling an angular movement of said gear at a predetermined part thereof.
' 4'. All grain binder fhaving, in combination, a main frame, a knotter actuating ffshai'tl journaled in said frame', a cam gear wheel secured to Said shaft, a lever pivotally mounted uponsai'd 4frame and having one endfthereoffengaging vWith said cam Wheel, a compressor shaft journaled in bearinge carried by said frame, an arm secured tof said ,-sliaft, a pitman 4 connection between said arm` and said leverand .a spring mechanism carriedby said compressorshaft and adapted toengage .With a fixed Lpart of said main :frame .during a part .of the operative movement of said compressor shaft.`
,grainvbinder having, `in combination, amain frame, a lnotter actuatingv shaft journaled insad frame, Va cam gear Wheel secured to said` shaft, a lever pivotally mounted upon said v.frame and having one endthereof engaging with Said cam Wheel, a compressor shaft `Journaled 1n bearings Carr1edbyea1d frame, an arm Secured to said shaft, ya fpitman connection between Said Earm .and saidlever, and a spring pressedplunger slidably mounted upon said compressor shaft and adapted to engage with said main frame during a part of the operative movement loit said lcompressor shaft.
6.1.A grain binder having, in combination, a main frame, a knotter actuating shaft `journaled in said frame, a camgear Wheel secured to said shaft, a lever /pivotally mounted upon;sa1d frame and having one -end thereof engaging with said cam wheel,
a compressor shaft `journaled in `bearings carried by -said frame, an arm ysecured to said shaft, a ,pitman connection between said armfandsaid lever, a bracket member formingpart of said arm, and a `vSpring;- pressed plunger carried b v said bracket, arranged transversely W`relative -to the `axis of said compressor shaft and adapted to en- .CQDies/,of-:thsfpatentfmaybefobtanedvforvevcents eachibvlad'dxessing the Commissionerof Patents,
