The object of this invention is to simplify the construction of baling presses of the type suitable for baling old waste papers and the like and to render the same convenient and easy of operation. Paper presses of this type are used by collectors of waste papers and, therefore, simplicity in construction and ease of operation are of very great importance as the purchasers and users of such devices are not financially able or provided with mechanical help or with suflicient business to justify the use of complex or large expensive baling mechanism.

One feature of the invention consists in a simple loop-like means for mounting and holding the screw beam when in use and also when not in use.

There is shown herein a rectangular ress box open at the top and with sides 3, a ack 4, a bottom 5, a door 6 and to bar 7 located immediately above the door w en it is closed. The bottom 5 has grooves 8 therein for the insertion of baling wires 9 for baling the bale 10 of waste ap'er.

The door 6 is liinged to the bottom of the box by the hinges 11 so that the door can be opened outwardly and downwardly and when lying on thefloor or ground, the hinged end of the door will be flush with the upper surface of the bottom 5 of the press box. This always maintains the door in the proper position with reference to the press box, when the door is open, and the proper relation of the door to the bottom 0 also maintained. This facilitates the refipeciflcation of Letters Patent.

When the door is closed, the device hecomes a waste pa or box into which waste paper is thrown t irough the open top, and after it is full of waste paper, a press plate 16 is placed in the upper end of the box upon the papers for pressing the papers down, as shown.

The press plate 16 has grooveslf for the wires 9 and has one or more handles 18 for its removal and a centrally located metal bearing plate 19 for the end of a screw 20. The screw operates throu h a screw beam 21 and has on its upper en a hollow T-head 22 through which a turning hand bar 23 is loosely and removably inserted, as desired. There is also upon said head 22 a handle 24 projecting upward therefrom toone side of the axis of the screw 20. This handle 24 is for the purpose of operatin the screw 20, when not under strain, whi e the hand bar 23 is for operating the screw while under strain.

These loops are plvotally mounted in connection with the upper end of the press box by pivot plates 32 and the loops extend over and around the ends of the screw beam, as shown in Fig.1, and the loop 30 is pivotally secured to the upper side of the screwbeam by a plate 34: so that the screw beam cannot escape from the press box.
