SAMUEL i3. FEIJRIOK, ornunranxas.
BAIL-JOINT.
Application filed May 28, 1914. Serial No. 841,560. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. FEDRIGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ruby, in the county'of Sherman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail joints, the primary object of which is to positively prevent the displacement of proximate rail ends, especially by lateral thrust which is frequently accompanied with dire results.
Another object of the invention is to strengthen the meeting ends of the rails, as it is well known that in the use of splice bars, etc., with which it is necessary to use bolts or the like for securing the same to the rails, that the latter are weakened and conse-' quently permaturely rendered inapt for use.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevational view. of the pair of rails embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on'the line 22 of Fig. 1, illustrating to advantage the mannerin which the rails are secured to the ties, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the key plates, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the rails showing to advantage the grooves in which the key plates are mounted, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of parallel rails constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the manner in which they are secured to the ties.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invent-ion in order to illustrate the application thereof, rail ties 5 are provided upon which are mounted a plurality of rails 6, the meeting ends of which are provided with longitudinally extending grooves 7 on the opposite sides of the web of the rail, said grooves being formed by extending flanges 8 from the head of the rail and flanges 9 upwardly from the base flange of the rail, into close proximity with the flange which depends from the head of the rail so as to provide a longitudinally extending opening 10, the rails being reduced as indicated at 11, so as to provide abutments 12 which terminate the Specification of Letters Patent;
openings '7 and 10. When the rails are on '1- gaged therefore, as'shown to advantage in Fig.1, an elongated groove-or recess is provided on each side of the rails at their meeting ends. Mounted 111 each of said elongated groovesor recesses which are provided when the ralls are'engaged, ls'a key plate or bar 13, each of .flwhich in the present instance, preferably, is of an oblong configuration and has extending from one of the bases thereof,
longitudinally of the plate and approximately midway of the opposite marginal "edges, a rib '14 whichis adapted for'engage :ment through the openings 10 which are likewise closed'at their opposlte ends when 0 Patented ea. aieia.
the rails are engaged the same as the open- 751 lngs As shown to advantage in Fig. 2,
the free longitudinal edges of the rib 14: lie
in a plane coincident with the'outer face of the flanges S and 9, thereby providing a vsolid rail structure. is provided with a transversely extending screw-threaded recess 15 which is adapted for engagement with the threaded shank of Each of: the ribs 14L '7 a set screw 16, t-helatter being more fully hereinafter described.
In order to-secure the rails to the ties I plates 16 are provided, one end of each of which is engaged with the tie and secured thereto byspikes 1,7, the opposite end of each of said plates having an opening therein which alines with one of the screw-threaded openings 15 in the rib 14 and is adapted for engagement with the threaded shank of the set-screw 16', as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 2. By this peculiar format-ion it is seen that the set screws 16 do not touch the rail which consequently eliminates any danger of the rail being. weakened by the provision of openings therein for securing the plate 16 thereto.
In use, one of the key plates 13 is slidably engaged in one of the openings 7 on one side of the rail, one of the terminals of the plate engaging with the abutment 12, while the plates 13 by the set screws 16', after which the spikes 17 are used for securing the plates to the ties. It is therefore seen that either longitudinal or lateral displacement of the rails is positively prevented, even should undue pressure be exerted thereon, since the rails would be reinforced at their jointures,
thereby being fully equipped to withstand the strain Whichis exerted thereon.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my inven-.
tion, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 13:
1. A rail joint including key plates for engagement in complemental openings in the meeting ends of the rails, and means in en' with the key plates for holding the rails in engagement with the ties.
4. A rail oint, in combination with a pair 40 of rails, each of which is provided on its opposite sides with elongated longitudinally extending openings, a key plate engaged in each pair of said openings on the opposite sides of said rail for preventing lateral thrust of the rails, and securing plates detachably engaged with said key plates and engaged with the ties for holding said rails in engagement with the latter.
5. A rail joint including a pair of rails, each of which is provided with elongated longitudinally extending slots on its opposite sides, whereby when the rails are engaged said slots are closed at their opposite ends, each of said slots provided with an opening its entire length and midway its vertical terminals, and a key plate carried on eachside of the rails in said slots for pre venting displacement of the rails.
6.A rail joint including rails provided with longitudinally extending slots in their meeting ends, key plates for engagement in said slots, securing plates for engaging the rails with the ties, and set screws detachably engaging the securing plates with the key plates for preventing the displacement of rails.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
