Description
UNITED STATFSPATFNI' OFFIOF.
HENRY-STUOKEY, oF BUoYRUs, OHIO, AssIGNoR 'ro A. o. sHocK, oF
SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT AlN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 111,272. dated January 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY STUCKEY, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Harvesters and I do hereby declare the following to be a ful1,`cle'ar, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, and in which- Figure l is a plan View, and Fig. 2 a perspective View, of the shoe.
My improvement consists in the combination of the hinged bar with a hinged shoe, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawing, A is the frame of the machine, made preferably of iron, having the side pieces made of angle-iron, to secure the greatest degree of strength in proportion to the weight of metal. B B are the wheels,
and C the crank-shaft which communicates motion to the knives.
The hinged bar D is attached to the frame A, on either side, by means of the plates a a secured to said fra-me, as'shown in Fig. 1, the object of said plates being to allow the said hinged bar to be shifted from one side of the frame to the other, making the machine a front-cut or a rear-cut machine.
The hinged bar D is connected to the frame A, at its opposite end, by means of the pivoted bar or rod g, the operation of which is illustrated by the dotted lines in the drawing.
Eis the cutter-bar, which is carried upon the end of the hinged bar, to which it is attached by the shoe Gr, and the knives are operated by the pitman F.
The shoe is peculiar in this, that it is con-I structed with ears turned up on the ends, to be used to secure it to the hinged bar (shown in Fig. 4) by pins passing through lugs on the hinged bar and holes in the ears G.
In operating this machine the tongue may be attached to the corner of the frame at A1 or A2, as the machine is to be arranged to operate in one direction or the other. When arranged as a front-cut machine the ton gue would be fastened at A2; when arranged as a rear-cut machine it would be attached at A'.
To change the machine from a front-cut to a rearcut machine it is necessary only to shift the tongue, to detach the pitman and the connecting-rod g from the knives and the shoe, and the shoe from the hin ged bar, and attach the hinged bar to the opposite side and reattach the shoe.
' In order that the pitman may be attached by a lock in the ordinary manner it should be made with a swivel-joint, in order to permit the direction of the lock to be reversed.
As the hinged bar is hinged in the same Vertical plane with the crank-shaft, it may be adjusted from one side to the other, and in either position it will maintain the cutter-bar in a line at right angles to the line of draft.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinged shoe G, constructed with ears G G, for the purpose of changing from a front to a rear cutter, in combination with the shifting hinged bar D', substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification this 13th day of October, 1870,in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
H. STUGKEY.
