int-mania (let. o, one.
.; ppiieation filed November 15, 1912. Serial No. 731,594.
To all lb/[01ft it may concern Be it known that ii, Fimniinm Gnnan NEAL, esiding at Halifax, in the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada, a citizen of the United States of i-Kinerica, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lloof Construction; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates more particularly to the cons action of metallic roofs, being intended primarily for application to the roofs oi box-cars and the like although it will be understood that it may be applied with advantage to the roofs of other structures.
The invention has for an object to pro vide an improved and simplified means of attaching the metal sheets of theroof to each other and to the "framework of the roof.
For flirt-her comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof reference will be h ad to the following description and append d claims, and to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which similar. refereneecharaeters indicate the s ime parts and wherein,
Figure l i plan view of a portion of a roof embo n the invention. Fig. 2 is a transvcrsa section thereof taken on the line 1. Fig. is an enlarged detail ion showing particularly one of between the roof sections. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 41 Fig. 3, the view being taken lo 'tudinally of the joint and transversely or the roof. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 Fig. 4 looking in the same d'rection as Fig. 3.
lily improved rooi comprises a plurality of sheet metal StlillOllS 2 which preferably (as shown in Fig. I) extend the full width. of the roof and are laid upon a suitable frame work, the invention being here shown as applied to the roof of a box car'and the framework as comprising longitudinal side beams or side plates 3 and transverse supports or carlincs 4', the side beams consisting of angle bars with their flanges turned outwardly l'rom thoir lop sides While the transverse supports are made of l -beams with downturned flanges. The side edges of the roof sections or sheets are bent downwardly over the horizontal flanges of the side beams as shown at 2 while rivctr 2 secure the sheets to the side beams and carlines. The adjacent edges of these sections are supported upon the (:H'lllltS and are turned upwardlyand slightly bacluvardly as at 3 and cover or looking strips 4- having downwardly and inwardly projecting flanges 5 are slipped over the flanges 3', the flanges 5 on the strips tcrminatiim at the edges of the root and the flat ends bent around under the outturned flanges of the side beams at 10 and rivets 11 passed through these ends 10, the flanges of the sido'bcams, and the main body of the rover strips to hold the latter in position. The dovetail arrangement; of the upturned and downturned flanges 3 and 5 (which is clearly shown in Fig. 5 ot' the drawings) serves to look the cover strip in position without any further attachments and providcs a rain proof joint between the roof sect-ions.
\Vhat I claim is follows: I
1. In car roof construction, the combination with longitudinal side beams and metal roof sections, of a transverse cover strip covering the adjacent transverse edges ol' the root sections and having its ends turned downwardly across the longitudinaledges of said beams and bent inwardly beneath the latter and rivets passing through the beams and through the strip above and loclow said beams.
2. in car roof constrm-tion, the combination with longitudinal sidc beams and metal roof sections having their transverse edges turned upwardly, of a transverse cover strip overlapping. the edges of'the roof sections and having its (-Hds turned downwardly across the longitudimll edges of said beams and cover strip and bent inwardly beneath said beams and rivets passing through the beams and through the strip above and be low said beams. I
3. In car roof construction, the combinalion with hingitndinal side beams and metal roof sections havimg their transverse edges turned upwardly and their longitudinal edges bent downwardly across the longitudi beams and cover strip and bent inwardly In testimony whereof, hzuqe signed nix name to this specification, 1n the presence 01' 10 two subscribing Witnesses.
