The feeding means 4, in the present embodiment, consists of a cylinder member 31, within which operates a piston vmember comprising a head 32 carried by a tubular piston rod 33 and having a packing cup 3-1 that is held to said head by a washer 35 and a plug 36 extending through the Washer and threaded into the head. The tubular piston rod 33 has a Lflared front end 37 that fits upon the tapered extension 23 of the head block t), and surrounding this flared end is a collar 38 held in place by side bolts 89 passing therethrough, said side bolts connecting the collar :38 with the front head l1, and thus serving to hold all the parts in assembled relation. The head 32 of the feed piston, the packing'cup 34 and the washer :l5 are pro\ided with passageways 40 that atl'ord conmiunieation from thc rear of the leed piston through the same with the interior of the piston rod 33. Assuming the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, motive fluid will also pass through the port 27, passageway 2G and port 28, thus operatine against the front pressure surface 22 and` driving the piston rearwardly. `Motive fluid in rear of the larger head 15 of the piston will exhaust through the port' 29 until said port is covered. As the piston moves rearwardly, the port 27 will be covered by the piston head 1G, and said piston will then be driven rearwardly under the expansion of the motive fluid in theft-ont portion'of the piston chamber t; against the pressure' against the rear surface 20. At the same time, as soon as the front head l5 covers the inner end of the exhaust. port 29, pressurewill begin to build uplehind the larger head 15, or in other words. against the rear pressure surface 21. The piston, however, moves rearwardly until. its reduced neck 18 or groove 19 uncovers the ports 25, whereupon the motive Huid, under pressure, will pass through these ports, around the groove 19, and into the rear portion ofthe piston chamber against the rear pressure surface 21. At this time, the enlarged head l5 has passed rearwardly to uncover the exhaust port 2S) in advance of the piston. Consequently the pistonwill immediately reverse and he driven forward on its working stroke. In this connection, with will he evident that there is constant pres- 'sure against the rear end of the feed piston,
but this' pressure is being lieved and augmented by the action of the motor piston. As already explained, there is constant pressure against the area 20, and during the forward movement of the piston, this helps to overcome the forward presalternately resure against the feed piston.. Moreover during the forward movement of the motor piston, when the ports are open and the exhaust 2S) in advanceof the piston head l5v is open, the pressure against the rear surtaee 2l ol the piston and against the front taee of the plug` S tends to oppose the forward pressure of the feed' piston. On the otherdiand, when the return stroke takes place, there is, for an instant, a pressure against the front surfaee 22 of the motor pistonand against the rear face of thefront head hloek- 1l, while air is then exhausted in rear ol the piston head l5. This assists the feeding means to move the machine to its work. As a result of these quick actions,
