BULLooir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Compresser' for Filhig-Drawers, of which the following is a specification.

These and other objects of my invention will be fully illustrated in the drawings, described in the speciiication and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.

This sliding member is channel shaped and the lower inner ends ofit are cut free from the front part of the channel and are bent in for a purpose that will presently appear.

Each of these iinks extends forward and between the forward ends of the links 20 and 21 is supported the pin- 24 and between the forward ends of the links 22 and 23 is supported the pin 25. The pin 24E passes through the openings 26 and 27 at the `top ofthe sliding channel 12 and through the slots 18 in the angles land 16; The pin 25 passes through the openings 28 and 29 at the bottom or' the channel 12 and through the slots 17 of the angles 15 and 16. When the sliding member 11 is raised by placing the handle 5 inA the` position shown in IFig. 2, the springs 37 and 38 will 'be stretched, drawing with them the sliding channel 12 which in turn will raise the front ends ofthe links 20, 2f, 22 and 23 which will re-act with the short links 30, 32, 31 and 33 forming a toggle therewith which will be partiallyl straightened by this movement causing the compressor 19 to move rearwardly. y
`The compressor 19 is provided with a foot 40 `that engages with the channel 41 providedA in the bottom of the drawer by which it is held in position during its forward and back movement. It .will be -observed that the movement of the compressor 19 vis comparatively limited. The movement is just snliicient to aord the necessary compression so as lto hold the papers or photographic llilms orA sheets of other material that may be held inthe drawer, it being understood that the primary purpose of this invention is vto provide a drawer that will hold photographic films tightly pressed'together so as to .exclude the air from between them and thus minimize the danger therefrom on account of fire. The lilms or papers are compressed against the movable compressor 42 which slides along the channel 41 kand engages therewith and is held in vplace thereby in any well known manner.
The particular compressor illustrated herein, consists of an upright plate 43 having` a flange 44 on the bottom thereofl and having a'foot 45 fastened thereto similar to the foot'40 illustrated in Fig. 3' which footengages with the channel 41; Mounted on `brackets, 46 is t e pin 47 on which is Vpivotally mounted t e cam plate 48 which cam plate is pressed rearwardly at the tcp by l meansof the spring 49, the lower edge 50 of which cam plate engages with the bottom of the drawer for the purpose of holding the compressorv 42 firmly in position. The vplate 43 has a finger hole 51 struck up therein as is shown in Fig. 2 to facilitate the convenient operation of the compressor.
The compressor 19 can be operated to its compressing position by the handle 5 when the drawer is in any position provided the operator holds the drawer stationary but it can be automatically operated to compressing position when the drawer is pushed fully into the case that holds it. The operator can then force the compressor to its compressing and locked position by simply pushing down and back upon the handle 5i. When 4the drawer reaches the end of the case, its further movement will be blocked and the handle can then be operated to move and lock the compressor. .et quick pull up and vout on the handle 5 will release the compressor 19 fromlhe lock after which the drawer can be drawn out, all of which can be done by the operator using a single hand.
If a stop is provided in the path of the movement of the drawer, the drawer may be drawn'forward until it encounters such stop after which the handle may be drawn up for the purpose of releasing the compressor. In the foregoing ways, the operation of the compressor by the handle is automatic. It will also be understood that the drawer may be mounted on slides interposed between it and the casing such as are shown in the patent to Ripson and Sampson, Nos. 884,525 and 884,526.'
I claim: v
1. In a filing case the combination of a drawer having a stationary front, a movable compressor mounted inside of said drawer adjacent to said front and means extending from said compressor to the outside of the drawer for moving said compressor.
2. In a filing case, the combination of a drawer having a stationary front, the compressor mounted to move inside of said drawer toward and away from said front, 95 means extending through the front of the drawer for moving said compressor to com pressing position.
3. In a filing case, the combination ofa drawer, a pair of compressors therein, one 100 of said compressors being movable longitudinally of the drawer, means for clamping said compressor in any desired position, the
other compressor having a limited movement in the drawer and means for forcing the second compressor toward the first conipressor.
4. In a filing case,`the combination of a drawer, a pair of compressors therein, one of said compressors being movable longitu- 119 dinally of the drawer, means for clamping said compressor in any desired position, the other compressor having a limited movement in the drawer and means for forcing the second compressor toward the first eompresser, said means including a lever ex-I tending through .the front of the drawer. 5.
