To all whom it may concern of which the following is a specification,
reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. I
My invention relates to improvements in looks and latches, and is an improvement'on my Patent No; 1,025,850.
The object of my invention is to provide *a combined lock and latch used on doors and similar structures, which may, be more readily applied to the door and is adapted I to adjust itself whereby the escutcheon plate rests against the side of the door, .as in the usual form of locks.
Another object of my invention is to pro.- vide a lock of this type in which the knob and all other parts of the lock are carried by the escutcheon plate and which may be more readily applied tothe door.
A still further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the bolt may be held in its outward or retracted position to prevent it from'being moved and also. to provide a positive locking means whereby the bolt may not be forced inwardly by pressure at the outer end thereozt.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view of my improved invention. Fig. 2 is a verti'cal sectional View taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 2, showing the latch and bolt in their retracted position. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on a line 4:-4 of Big. 2. Fig. '5 is an enlarged perspective view of the bolt locking pawl. Fig. 6 is an inverted perspective view of the looking pawl for locking the bolt in its upward position against inward movement.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the outer. edge of the door-in which is mortised the face plate 2 of the lock. The
face plate 2 is secured to the escutcheon plate 3, by means of screws 4:, passing through the laterally turned ears 5, carried thereby. The said face plate is of a width greater than that of the door, and as shown in Fig. 1, extends beyond the face of the door. Carried by the inner face of the face plate 2 is the 5 barrel 6. in which the lock proper is located.
In locks of the character to which my in- 'ventionrelates, it is understood by those skilled in the art that the latch 7 slides within the bolt 8-, and both the bolt and the latch are adapted to be operated by the inside knob 9. The latch 7 is also retracted by the outside knob 10, the same as the ordinary look now in use. The bolt, however, is not retracted by theou-tside knob, but is operated by the key 11, which in turn operates the key spindle 12, all of which needs .no

Having thus described my invention,
what-I claim and desire to secure by LettersPat'ent is:

'6. In a lock of the character described,
the combination with a sliding bolt, of a disk, a spring pressed ball within the housing and engaging the disk for frictionally holding it in its adjusted position, a latch carried by the bolt and a pawl engaging the latch and holding the bolt in its outward position against lnward movement by the pressure at the outer end and allowing the 'boltto be readily withdrawn by an inward pull at its inner end. 7. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a sliding bolt, a disk for operating the said bolt, a spring pressed ball engaging the disk and frictionally holding it in its adjusted position, whereby the bolt is held in its inward or outward position.
