Description

J .LUSH. DEVICE FOR PRAGTISING GOLF PUTTING.
APPLICATION FILED PEBJ'I, 1914.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
THE NORRIS PETERS c0., PHOTO-Lind), WASHINGTON, D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH LUSH, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.-
DEVICE FOR PRACTISING GOLF-PUTTING.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn LUsH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Practising Golf-Putting, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for practising golf putting.
More specifically my invention is directed to devices for practising golf putting comprising a base having an interior hole or cup, and a series of arched passageways disposed about the periphery of the base. Preferably, the base is circular in shape with the interior hole or cup disposed at the center of the base, and the arched passage ways extend about the complete periphery of the base.
My invention is designed to be used with golf balls of the regulation size and construction, and putting may be practised with a regulation putter by placing a golf ball at desired distances from my device and putting the ball through the passage-ways in any desired sequence into the hole or cup of the base. For this purpose, it is desirable to designate the several passage-ways with serial indications, such as numbers, which indications may be affixed to the base proximate the respective passage-ways, or on indicators disposed on portions of the respective passage-ways, or hung from the respec tive arches as shown.
Further objects and features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which Fi ure 1 is a perspective view of a device for practising golf putting embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail central sectional elevation of the base of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of a modified form of my invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the circular base 1 is provided with the central opening or hole 2. As indicated, the outer periphery or circumference 3 of base 1 is somewhat depressed relative to the flange of opening 2 and the upper surface of the base is given a slight upward grade toward the central hole or cup 2, whereby a hole or cup is provided for even though the device may be placed on a horizontal surface such as the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 17, 1914.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914. Serial No. 819,159.
floor of a room, while at the same time the grade of the surface of the base may be substantially horizontal as shown. Such relationship of the base and its internal hole or cup is a fair approXimationof actual conditions of putting cups on the greens of a regulation golf course. As the base 1 is preferably made 'of tin or other suitable material having a smooth upper surface, the slight upward and inward incline toward the cup compensates for the resistance or friction offered by the grass of the green, tlius further simulating actual conditions of P y- I have shown a series of vertically extending rods or bars 1, 5, 6, etc., to 12 having their lower ends soldered or otherwise suitably affixed to the periphery 3 of the base 1. The circular wire or ring 13 iscarried at the upper extremities of said respective rods or bars, whereby there is formed a plurality of passageways disposed about the periphery of the base. In the particular device shown in Fig. 1, nine such passage-ways are formed by the nine rods or bars at to 12 in combination with the circular wire or ring 13. The respective passage-ways are inclicated in Fig. 1 by indicators 14 respectively designated 1 to 9, inclusive. The radial lines 15 may be painted or otherwise marked on the base 1 to form partial sectors extending from the respective passageways to the interior hole or cup 2. The flag 16 may be supported on a suitable base within the hole or cup 2, or may be omitted if an unobstructed cup is desired.
The modification shown in Fig. 3 is in most respects similar to the device shown in Fig. 1 and like reference numbers are used to designate like parts. However, the designations 1 to 9, in Fig. 3, are painted or printed within the corresponding partial sectors formed by the lines 15, whereby the indicators 14 of Fig. 1 may bedone away with. But it will be clear that the indicators 14 may also be used in the modified construction shown in Fig. 3.
I From the above it will be clear that golf putting may be practised by disposing my device at a suitable point on the ground or on the floor of a room, and the golf ball disposed at suitable distances from the de vice. With the use of the putter, the player endeavors to putt the ball through the re spective passage-ways in a predetermined sequence, as in ser atz'm through the various passage-ways. For example, the device may be placed at the center of a rug, and the golf ball placed at the corner of the rug in line with passage-way indicated 1; thevplayer now endeavors to putt the ball through the passage-way 1 into the hole or cup 2. If the player is successful, the next play is to putt the ball through the passage-way 2, say from the same or another position on the rug. Thus the ball may be putted from various points located at various distances from the hole or cup 2, and putted under varying conditions, whereby the skill of the player in putting may be improved by the use of my invention.
It will be understood, of course, that other rules may be made for the use of my device than for practising golf putting, as described, such as adapting the same for use inother games.
Whereas I have shown specific embodiments of my invention, it will be understood thatmany changes and modifications may be madewithout departing from the scope of my invention.
JVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device for practising golf putting, the combination of a substantially fiat annular base having a flange extending about aninterior hole, posts spaced apart from one another and disposed adjacent the outer periphery of said base, and a member extending along and above the outer periphcry of said base, said member cooperating with said posts to form arches.
2. In a device for practising golf putting, the combination of a substantially fiat annular base having a flange extending about a central hole, posts spaced equal distances from one another and disposed adjacent the outer periphery of said base, a member held by said posts extending a complete circumference above the outer periphery of said base and markers carried by said member.
3. In a device for practising golf putting, the combination of a substantially annular base having a central opening, said base being of reduced effective thickness at its outer periphery and extending at a slight upward grade toward said hole, posts spaced apart from one another and disposed adjacent the outer periphery of said base, a member held by said posts above the outer periphery of said base and markers carried by said member.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses:
JOSEPH LUSH.
lVitnesses K. G. Ln Am), HENRY J. LUCKE.
