Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. Avis, a citizen of the United States, residingvat Hartford, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have made certain new and* useful Improvements in Take-Ups for Crochet-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and c Xact de scriptioii of the same,.reference being had* to the accompanying drawings, forming a i part of this specification, `and to thepgures and lettersof reference marked thereon.'

Examples of plain crochet machines are set,V forth. and referred to` in United-StatesI kPatents #414,718,` issued November 12, `1889 and 497,587., issued May.' 16, 1893. In the shell stitch machines` the fabric fed only after several stitches havebeenformed at or near one point. The stitches are thus formed in clusters and when the fabric `is fed along they are spread `out at their outer .extremity and assume a` forni similar to `that of a fan or of a scallop shell. The

Then passing this position andcontinuing on to the bottom oi its stroke, the eye 22 pulls off thread by increasing the distance between the moving eye 221 and the two fixed eyes 24a and 25a. yThe ascending of' the Ieye 22b slackens the supplemental thread as 'it approaches a position midway between thetwo eyes 24 and 25@L and, passing this position in its continued ascent the eye 22b takes up a more orless definite amount of the 'slack in the supplemental thread according to the 'adjustment `of one or `both of the two fixed eyes. The supplemental thread and needle thread take-ups, coperate with the supplemental thread carrier, the needle and the crochet hook to ease up or slacken the thread at suitable periods, and also to take up the threads and to -pull the threads through the tensions at suitable times. The amount of thread pulled oli1 can be regulated within practical limits by changing the positionsot the thread eyes 24a 25a and 2621,'fthu`s making the loops of the finish tighter or looser as may be desired.

4. In a two thread crochet machine including a needle bar and mechanism for actuating the same, a thread pull off and take up embodying three thread guides mounted on a stationary portion of the machine at one side of aline parallel with the needle bar and in the direction of its reciprocation with relation to each other, a tension mounted at the sideof said line opposite to that on which the thread guides are located, a thread eye carried by the needle bar mechanism and reciprocating between the tension and the thread guides, and means for adjusting the thread guides relatively to each other and with relation to the tension, in the direction of the reciprocation of the thread eye. y

In a two thread lcrochet machine, a take up for the two threads embodying two pairs of thread supporting elements, a .reciprocating thread engaging implement, the thread supporting elements being arranged one pair at one side of the .pathof the reciprocating implement" and the other pair ment and in a line diagonal to said path,
the threads beingpassed through the reciprocating thread engaging implement intern mediate `the elements of the respective pairs of thread supporting elements, whereby one thread isconstrained at two points on the l same side of the path of the implement and the other thread is constrained at two points `on opposite sides respectively of the said path and in a line diagonal thereto, while thethread intermediate the points of constrainment is reciprocated in the path of the implement. i

In a crochet machine adapted to forming overedge stitches from a main thread carried by an eye pointed needle and a supplemental thread interloopedwith the main thread by means of a crochet hook, the comf bination of take up devicesfor the main and 4supplemental threads, thefsaid devices ncluding `a moving implement and two pairs of thread supports, one pair coperating with the implement for each thread, the path of movement of the implement being between the elements of the pair of main thread supportsand at one side of the line of the elements ofthe pair of supplemental thread supports whereby the main and supplemental threads are pulled off and controlled substantially `as shownI and described.
