Definitions
- a desirable composition will contain the following elements in about the proportions named: carbon; manganese; nickel, up to Specification of Letters Patent.
- the amount of nickel necessary to use can be kept below 1.00 per cent.,,which is a considerable less amount than is ordinarily necessary in order to toughen the steel.

Description
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. WALES, 0F MUNHALL, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO CARNEGIE STEEL COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ALLOYED STEEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. WALEs, of Munhall, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Al-- loyed Steel, of which the following is a specificatio My invention relates to chrome vanadium alloy steels and the object of this invention is to produce an alloy metal of superior quality and of a new composition as is hereinafter described.
Incarrying out my invention relatively small pro ortions of manganese, chromium and vana ium are employed, together with a much smaller portion of nickel than usual, which are combined with steel containing from .35 per cent. to .45 per cent. carbon.
I have discovered. that by adding a small amount of vanadium to the steel, the amount of nickel can be materially reduced without changing the physical qualities of the resulting alloy steel.
A desirable composition will contain the following elements in about the proportions named: carbon; manganese; nickel, up to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 27, 1909. Serial No. 534,986.
Patented Sept. 22, 1914.
1.00 per cent; chromium, up to 2.00 per cent.; vanadium, below .15 percent.
Small quantities of sulfur and phosphorus are necessarily !present in the composition, the amount of t ese materials being kept as low as possible.
By the use of the vanadium and chromium within the limits set forth, the amount of nickel necessary to use can be kept below 1.00 per cent.,,which is a considerable less amount than is ordinarily necessary in order to toughen the steel.
The amounts of the various alloying metals may be changed within the limits as set forth herein and in some cases may slightly exceed the amounts given.
I claim An alloy steel containing carbon, manganese, chromium,-.99 per cent. nickel, .15 per cent. vanadium.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set m hand.
y SAMUEL S. WALES. Witnesses v R. D. LITTLE, Jae. L. WELDON.
