TED s rrne PATENT- OFFICE.
' ruuocli ommiocxi Patented Sept '22, 1914.
Application filed September 17, 1913. Serial No. 790,323.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW FLESH, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Windber, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J unction-Blocks, of. which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s.
This invention relates to certain improvements in junction bloeks andhas relation more particularly to a device of this general character which is of a portable type and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general. character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be quickly and conveniently assembled in operative position and wherein the possibility of danger is substantially entirely eliminated.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of. the several parts of my improved device whereby certai important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive. and otherwise better adapted and more advantageous for use. all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that the invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same .With reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure l is a view in perspective of a junction block constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig.2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the device as disclosed in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the block and longitudinally through a socket mounted therein and through the coacting plug.
able configuration, and preferably formed of wood adapted to be superimposed one above the oth r and the blocks l lare provided in their opposed faces with the parallel grooves 2 the grooves of one block being adapted to register with the grooves of the second block and thereby all'ord suitable seals tionjof the coacting conductor 5 whereby it will be readily perceived that the connection pletely insulated, such sleeve 6' extending rearwardly of the socket a predetermined distance and-having itsouter end open so wise interfered with;
In order to maintain the blocks or mem-' bers l1 in clamping engagement with the socket members 3-3 I direct transversely through such blocks 11"at substantially 'the centers thereof the headed'bolt 7 having its threaded end portion 8 projected whereby it may be engaged bythe retaining or'clamping member 9, herein shown as a nut adapted for endwise adjustment along such bolt in a manner believed to be obvious. I also herein shown as substantially right angular in form, its free flexed portionv being provided with suitable apertures 11 through which any desired anchoring means may be passed to engage a post or other support to which it is desired to apply my improved -junction block. v
Adapted to enact with each of the socket members 33 is a plug member 12 having a split end portiOn adapted to be inserted within such socket and having a conductor 14 and an electric connection therewith, said connection being'herein shown as afforded -by se 'iarating the strands'of the cable of which the conductor is composed and loopmg the same around the plug, as indicated at I As shown in theaccompanying drawings my imp ove junction block comprises two clamping members or blocks l--1 of suit-- 15, whereby such engagement with the plug thcroupol'l. ed, the plug and the connectedportion' of the conductor 14 are suitably Wrapped or bound by the insulating tape or material 17 andsuch binding or wrapping extends to such an extent along the adjacent portion of the conductor and of such thickness as to for each of the sotiketmembeis 3-3 which of the conductor with the socket is comthat the fiexibility'of the conductor is in no may be readily adjusted toany position After thisconnectmn 1s affordconveniently all'ord a hand grasp whereby employ as herein disclosed, this bolt 7 asaf means for holding in operative relation with one of the blocks 1 the anchoring plate 10 V the plug may be manipulated for insertion within the socket without the possibility of the operator receiving any shock Whatever. While my improved junction block may be used for many purposes, it is designed .for use particularly by miners-or other artisans who are compelled to employ various types of machinery at different localities. It is thought to be obvious that the anchoring plate 10 permits the device to be supported y any convenient supporting surface and one of the conductors is employed as a ground, while the second of such conductors 5 is adapted to be suitably engaged with any energized conductor such as a trolley wire, as is now generally used in mining for the operation of the cars. The conductors 14 of the plug members 12 are adapted to be properly connected with the machine to be operated. I From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that a junction block constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be operatively assembled and by-reason of the minimum possibility of danger, and it will also be obvious that I do not wish to be understood as shown in carrying out my invention in prac- 7 what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is In combination, superimposedblocks. pro- I vided with registering grooves in the opposed faces thereof, said grooves extending entirely across the blocks, socket members adapted to be inserted between the blocks and Within the registerin grooves, said socket members being of a ength substantially equal to the length of the sockets, in- -13 sulating rings at the rear of and in alinement with the sockets and adapted to be positioned entirely beyond the blocks, insulation surrounding the sockets and the rings and maintaining the rings in assembled position relative to the sockets, a clamping bolt disposed through the blocks intermediate of the grooves, and socket members. a In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
