JOSEPH E. PERRAULT, OF BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HOOD RUBBER $0., WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACI-IfiSETTS.
METHOD or we MACHINE son. FOLDING THE EDGES or Rosana SHEETS.-
of this character a fabric is used which is provided with a facing or coating of lubber applied by means of a calender, and as the coated strip of fabric comes from the calender there is a strip or edge of the unvulcanized rubber which projects beyond the fabric. This must be folded over upon the inner face of'thefabric, and as the edge of the fabric strip is ,of irregular contour, and the rubber unvulcanized and hence of sticky character, this folding operation is one of some difficulty and has heretofore, so far as I am'aware, only been done by hand.
The obj ect of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a method and a mechanical device or apparatus for accomplishing this folding action in a simple and expeditious manner, and the invention includes the novel construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A form of mechanism embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a plan view; Fig. 2 is an endelevation; Fig. 3 is a side elevation; Fig. 4 is a detail view of a sample of stock with the edge partly folded, and Fig. 5 is a detail view.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates a suitable bed plate or frame designed to be adapted to any convenient support, and ha ring journaled between upwardly extending bearing lugs 2 a roller 3 over whlch the edge of the stock to be folded is adapted to be movcd. The stock, which is indicated at A, is held and passed over the roller by hand, the edge to be folded over by the ma- ;chine being indicated at a. As the stock is moved along over the roller 3 in the direction of the arrow X in Fig. l, the pro ect Specification of Letters Patent.

ing edge of the soft rubber is thrown up-- ward by the action of the rapidly arotating folding disk or wheel 4, which is provided with a plain, smooth edge and driven in any suitable manner, as, for instance, by a belt passing over agrooved or pulley portion 4 which is conveniently formed integral with the disk or wheel et. This wheel a is Ounnaled on a stud projecting from the carrying bracket 5.' The rotation of the disk or wheel 4 causes the soft rubber as it comes in contact with the edge of the disk to be thrown upward over and back upon the inner face of the fabric, and it is then pressed down so as to cause it to adhere smoothly to the inner face ofthe fabric by the presser orhammer 6. This presser device has a downwardly extending or elbow portion 6 journaled upon the pin or stud 7, and to the angle or elbow 6 is pivotally connected by pin 7 the end of a rod or pitman 8, the other end of which is eccentrically connected to an operating shaft 9. I prefer to make this eccentric connection in the shape of a strap 10 encircling an eccentric 13' carried by the shaft, with preferably a circular se ries of balls between the strap and eccentric, as shown, and I also prefer to journal the shaft 9 in ball bearings, as shown, and drive the same from a. pulley 11, though it will be understood, of course, that I do not limit myself to this particular form of driving means.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is i 1. In combination a movable support for the stock to be folded, a rotary disk having its edge located in proximity to said support, and arranged to rotate in a plane substantially perpendicular to the edge of the stock, and a presser device moving toward and from the face of said support.
2. In combination a roller support, a ro tary folding dislchaving its edge in proximity to said support and journaledupon an axle lying in a horizontal plane substa-n tially tangential to the upper face of said support, a presser device or hammer adapted to press the material. operated upon against said. support, and means for oscillating the hammer.
3. In combination a roller journaled upon a horizontal axis, .a disk having a smooth edge locatedin proximity to the upper face of said "roller, a'presser device or hammer m projectingj-across the upper face of the roller, andhaving 3 depending arm pivet'ed updn aifixed s'upp0rt,.a ipitman' pivotally cenhecte'd at one end to said arm and an (30-- 5 centric for operating the opposite end of said pitman, substantially as'described. v
4. The herein described method ofwfoldiing sheets of-unvulcanized or like adhesive material which consists in causing the edge 10 hi the sheet to progressively contact with a.
smooth' edged disk or.-r011e1-rotating in a JOSEPH PERRAULT.
