Application filed January 29, 1914. Serial No. 815,2'11.
ToaZZ whom itimaj/ concern:
Be it known that I, OLor NILssoN RIKQF,
, a subject ofthe King of'Sweden, residing at London,- England, have invented cert-aln between two vpf-icking pieces which are V -rfb'eing semi-circular. and held in a round slot of. an angular slot. ,Semi-circular, cutters Improvements in Tool-Holders for Metal- Turning'Lathes, of whichthe following is a specification.
. 'Tool-holders for metal-turning lathes are sometimesV provided with means 1 whereby a cutter of angular cross-section can be ad- -justed about its axis into various positions for' giving the cutting edge the proper angle relative to the work and to the direction in whichthe cutter is moved. Thus forinstance it is known to arrange a cutter grooved for its reception, the packing piecesin holder which is contracted by means of aI clamp-screw. It is also known to clamp the cutter, by means of an angular clamping bar and. a lclamp-screw bearin atright Iangles against said bar, to di erent sides arealso arranged together with a semi-cir- Gular V.clampingIbar or Ipacking piece a cylindi'ical slot carried obliquely. and longitucl-inally through the holder andheld position by means of the wedges and screws. Finally it is known .to arrange around cutten in a groove in a' packing piece together with .which it is`.held in a shankin a substantially vertical position, the' lacking piece having at itsv upper end -a s oulder 'which supports 'both elements on?V the -shank Thetool-*holder most' commonly in use is the 'one in which the cutter is fitted ina slot carried obliquely and longitudinally through a steel shank and held in position by means -ofa clamp-'screw set at 'r1ght angles to the cutter...
The object 'o'f:theliiiventi'on is to modify -tliis type of tool-holder so that a cutter of angular cross-section can, without in the least-impairing the stability of the tool, b'e easilyl-adjusted about its axis into varlous angular positions according to the nature of the work' and to the movement of the tool. This object is achieved by' adaptmg the tool slot to accommodate a semi-cir- `nular packing piece below and an angular' clamping bar-above the-cutter, the clamping bar, whlch determinesthe position of the Vcutter, being exchangeafble` .SandiV reversible,
ing a front view of the holder, and Fig. 2, a
sectional side view of the same. i
The holder a, which may have any of the usual shapeS, has a slot b which is carried obliquely through the head in a longitudinal plane and which serves to receive the cutter c. H v
According to the invention, the slot b is made cylindrical throughout and itis erably widene'd in the head of the holder for the reception of a packing piece d ofisemicircular or nearly semieircular cross-section. This' packing piece', which can be adjusted in the slot about its `axis into various angu- -lar positions,- has on its flat side a longitudinal grooveof a cross-section correspond- -tothatv of the `cutter c which is ac- 'comnrodated in the groove.- F or holding the packing piece and the cutter in the 'desired position,Y aA clamping bar e is provided, which is guided in a key-way adjoining the upper part of the slot 6.* The usual vclamp-screw f ispreferably atl right angles to the upper 'surface of the bar' e' against which it bears With its flat lower end.
If the face of the cutter is to be held in a transversely' horizontal position, a clampi ingbar is used whose lower surface is par- 1 allel to the upper one. If a transverse inclination of the face4 isrequired, for instance as shown i-nfFig. 1, the lower surface of the clamping bar is cut at the' desired angle relative to the upper one. In this case, the advantage is obtained that a mere revrsal of thev clamping bar in the key-way, sets the tjool forcutting. in the oppositedirection. In either instance the cutter will be held firmly in position, a rotary displacenuentl bemg positively prevented b provision of a corresponding bar.
/pref- The pac ki n% piece is madeof steel so as to resist Wear,an lit formed at the front Withv a shoulder d1 ,which 'holdsthe same in its proper longitudinal position and which lends 'additional supportito'the cutter c.
A slot g is made in the shank of the holder so as to admit, in case of need, a thin Wedge behind the clamping bar efiand facilitate its removal. U;
The arrangement allows "the cutter. to' be made of halfthe usual cross-sectionalarea, since the reduction in' the strengththus incurred is compensat'ed forbyI the clamping bar and the packing piece..` In'iorder Anot .to 'diniinish the face area of'the cutteriwlien ;-;the size of'same' is thus reduced, the'cutter scribed', comprisin 'i'lique cylindrical ongitudinal too slot, :of semi-'circulai-..packing piece'arranged' in *the `frontipart of said'islot so thatit canlbef ad'f k;,-. -ljusted about its axis into various a'ngular.``
is preferably made of triangular or ti'apll ezoidal cross-section, the groove in thepacking piece being made to correspond. 1=-. W claim:
