Appncatio 'ined 'February 20,1913.` seriaiNo. 749,722.
f 'sperciiilcyatidnof Lettr Iratnt. PatentedSept. 15, 1914.
To all whom it may concern f L Bel it known that I, GEORGE GERSTEN SLAGER, a citizen of theUnited-States, residing at 'NVoosten inthe countyof Wayne' and State of Ohio, have invented anew and use-l ful Road-Cart, of which the following is a specification f gf ylVIyinvention relates to improvements in road,- carts, andparticularly to such `,as are used for driving and horse-training pu'r-` poses. y l
Itsfobject is to provide means for increasing the carrying capacityzof such cartsand improve` their utility for horse training purposes. y.
It consists, primarily, of a` novelplatform or basket attachment, suspended `from the rear of the cart,and`means for reinforcing the supporting members of the cart adapted` to the purpose,and ymeans for'detachably` securing said platform thereto-all as hereinafterfully set forth, and stated in the apn pendedclaims'., ,I l f My invention is illustrated lby ythe accom panying drawings, in whichsimil'ar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts.
Referring to the drawings,1Figure lis a view in perspective of a cart embodying my i invention, one wheel thereof being removed for better illustration of the parts referred to. Fig. 2 is a view of my detachable platform removed from the cart. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the connecting or coupling means Iv use to secure the platform to the cart. Fig. 4 is a detail View of one of my spring-bars in connection with the thill and cross-bar, detached. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of Fig. 4 on the line XY thereof, the thill and spring-bar being shown in cross section thereof. n
Its construction and operation will now be set forth in connection with the letters and figures of the drawing.
Referring thereto, B shows one of the wheels and C the thills mounted on the axle, and D the seat of the cart, and E its body and front platform, all of which are quite similar to thosein carts heretofore used.
1 is one of la pair of spring-bars on which the seat D is mounted; its forward end is securedunderneath the thill C by a clip 1a, and the rear end thereof engages the outer edge of the seat D by a hook 16, as shown in Fig. 1;
The seat D is supported uponthe outer vends of said pair of springbars,-1n the usual well knowniway, and theplatform is Ideta'chably secured` to and suspended from saidfseat ,and front/platform, as hereinafter described?` .To 'provide supporting .means for this unusual stress upon said spring-bars I reinforce the connection between the thills C andthe crossvbar 2 at the `fulcrum point n ofthe spring-bar 1, asillustrated in Fig. 4:. For this purpose I connect the `cross bar 2 tothe thills C, respectively, without the use of mortisesas heretoforei .which weaken `the supporting'strength of `the thills, the ends of said cross-bar` being abutted: againstthe" f *sides yof the thills respectively,'with` a -pro jecting` portion .over-lapping the same, as
.shown in Fig. 5. To furthen` strengthen this connection `for the'` purpose aforesaid, ai
metal strap 3 overlaps-the extended end of said crossrbar 2 and securesit to the thillby extendingxjover andy .around the `outsider thereof, and downwardly soas to engage an extension from an underl clip llby its thread ed end `and nut-'3a. thereon. `Said'under clip is made .of onepliece ofastrapfmetal bentand fitted to lie snug'against said spring-bar` asa fulcrum therefor andengagingv three'sides thereof; from vthence it ,extendsuinwardly and upwardly through a metal plate 13 lying horizontally above the `spring-bar and underneath said thill, and passes through l the cross-bar 2 so as to engage the inner y end of said strapk 3, and be secured thereto by the nut ta, as shown inF ig. 5. The outer ends of the cross-bar 2 may be further secured by means of a threaded bolt 14: driven through the strap 3 and diagonally into `the thill as shown. Said seat supporting and reinforcing means are, .by a division, reserved for a separate application.
The detachable platform or basket P is preferably made up` of a series of slats secured parallel to each other upon a pair of metal straps, bent for the purpose substantiallyy as shown in Fig. 2. Their front or inner portions 7 7 are extended upwardly and terminate in hooks, each of which is adapted to engage a corresponding clip 9 attached to the frontl platform E at a point near the axle ofthecart, and at the bends vof the frontfplatform supporting members d-d respectively; said hooks engage` the clips 9 in such a manner as to secure said rear plati form thereto when the o-uter portion thereof y is in elevated position, and are detachable therefrom when said outer end is lowered. The youter portions 6 6 of said straps are bent upwardly and inwardly, each terminatl'.
ing with a hook 10 adapted tov engage a corresponding clip 17 under the seat Dat' the outer ends of said spring-bars 1 1; saidk hooks are detachably secured in said clips 17, respectively, 'by means of a springlever 5 whichis fastened at one end underneath lthe seat D and extends'outwardly through said clip and bears upon the adjacent hook l10'infsuch amanner `as lto prevent its escape from ysaid .clip yexceptloyI4 lifting said spring v lever whichextends outwardly to 'provi-de vaj handle therefor,as shown infFig. 3.] i' 1 f The connectingk mechanism for'therea'r platform 4is suchthatv when the inner ends of the straps/7 are :introduced into the Aclips 9 when the :platform is lowered at lits outerl end, theyr become secured therein by theelevat-ion ofthe same to norm-al position shown inl*1 ig. .11.; and the `'outerends of saidy straps 6 are then entered `into "the clips 17:, respec# tively, and.arewthereinfsecured and held inf position'b'y the .pressure of said spring-lever -uponfthe hooks 10,'as aforesaid, thereby making the entire platform P reasily. detach# at the vrearof thecart. i
The several parts may., ofcourse be modified Within `the scopeof myv invention.
