JoHN n. rLnfroHne, or REofroRfro'WN, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 111,050, dated January 17, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEED-DRILLS AND COCKLE-SEPARATORS `COMBINED.
The Schedulen referred to in these Letterg Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it k'npwn that I, JOHN E. FLETcHEu, of Rectortown, in the count-y ofFauquier and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful improved Seed-Drill and .Cockle-Separator Combined; and I do hereby declare ,the following to be a full, clear, and exact vdescription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specifica- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sect-ion.
Figure 2 is a side view, the dotted lines representing the driving-wheel.
This invention relates to an improved combined seed-drill and cockle-separator, and consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of certain parts of tpe machine, as hereinafter generally' described, and as specically stated in the claim.
In the drawing, the right hand is the front of the seedldrill.
A A are the draft-wheels, A being the drivingwheel, to which the gearing-wheel B is-,secured on the inside.
O is a gear-wheel attached to the end of the rear shaft d. 'E is a connecting-wheel, having its axis. near the end of lever j, land can be thrown in and ont of gear, at pleasure, by the lever f.
Motion is communicated, from the rear shaft d to Y the front shaft g, through the pipons r and s.
rl,he shafts d and g have their bearings in the supports tand n, and the pinions 1 and s are placed ou theinside of the support u, while the wheel C is on the outside of the same support.
H is the seed-box, whichv is divided longitudinally by the partition r1 into two chambers, the seed being fed through discharge-orices j in the front chamber, to the rollers h and l, where it is separated, the grain falling, by its own weight, into the seed-conductors M, and thence to the ground, Vwhile the eockle clings to the elastic covering 011 the rollers luutil itis scraped oil' bythe innei' edgesxof the metallic plates n, whence `it passes through the cockle-comluct-ors O| into the. trough P, from which it can be removed at pleasure. The rear chamber iu the seed-box is used as a reservechamber. y
The seedconduetors M and cockle-couduc'tors O are fastened together at q, and the conductors O attached to the front of the seed-box H, so as to be removed when neeessaryto empty the cockle from the trough P, which are made to lit t-he rollers snugly, so that they shall form serapers for the front ones to the end of removing the eoekle which may adheretu their peripheries.
They also serve the additional purpose of keeping both sets of rollers in place on their shaft-s, rendering other modes of fastening of said rollers unnecessary. v
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire te secure by Let- 1. The Ametal frames n n, constructed and` arranged as shown and described, whereby they perform the double fnnctionof scraping the peripheries of the front rollers l l, and of retaining both sets of rollers in place on the shafts d and g, as specified.
2. The improved seed-drill and coekle-separator, herein described, consisting of the seed-box H t', the metal scraper-frame n, rollers k l, seed-discharge spout M, cockle-spout 0, trough P, pinions r and s, gears B C, shifting-gear E, and lever f, all constructed and arranged as shown and described. l
JNO. E. FLETCHER.
