RICHARD C. BRADSHAW AND THOMAS A. GARVEY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RICHARD C. BRAD- snxw and THOMAS A. Ganvnr, citizens of the United States, resioing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
This invention relates to new and useful iimproven'lents in nonrefillable bottles, which are provided with valves for closing the neck of the bottle in certain positions.
The object of the invention resides in the provision in a bottle of the class described of a guard or cage whereby the valve head, which usually, as in this case, comprises a ball, held against undesired displacement, sa id guard at the same time permitting free outlet of the liquid.
A further object resic es in improving-the eliiciency and simplifying the general structure of devices of this charact r.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts to be more fully hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference desi nate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the upper portion of the bottle and showing the improved valve associated therewith aud shown in el vation, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the improved valve also in section, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 5 designates the upper portion of a bottle, the lower end of the neck 6 of which is provided with an annular enlargement 7 on its inner periphery. The top face of this enlargement is provided with a cutaway portion 8 forming a valve seat.
A spherical valve 9 is provided. for seating on the enlargement 7 and carries the usual arm 10 which extends through the neck of the bottle and carries at its free end Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed J'u1y 3, 1913.

relatively thin neck portion thereof a guard 12 is provided. F or holding the guard in place, the intermediate portion of the neck is cutaway as at 13 to provide a shoulder and the periphery of the guard adjacent its upper end is provided with a circumscriloing groove 1% in which is seated a suitable packmg or gasket 15 extending thereloeyond and engaging the above-mentioned shoulder. This guard is formed with a bore extending from its bottom face to a point adjacent its upper end and the wall of the guard adjacent this bore is provided with a plurality of spaced longitudinal slots 16. The guard has its lower end engaging the annular enlar ement 7 of the neck of the bottle and the bail valve 9 is slidably disposed within the bore thereof and thus spaced from the neck portion of the bottle. To permit outlet of the liquid from the bottle, the intermediate portion of the periphery of the guard is provided with a circumscribing de pression 1'? which coacts with the lower end of the cutaway portion 13 of the bottle neck to provide an annular space. It is observed that the slots open into this annular space. A series of bores 18 extend inwardly from the depression 17 and are then directed upwardly, opening upon the top face of the guard.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and efficient device has been provided which will efficiently perform all of the functions normally required thereof.
The operation of the device should be largely apparent from the foregoing de scription, taken in connection with the drawings. When the bottle is tilted the valve 9 falls away from its seat 8 and into the bore of the guard. Liquid then passes through the neck of the bottle into the bore, outwardly of the bore through the slots 16 and into the circumscribing depression 17, from which it passes through the bores 18 into the free end of the neck of the bottle.
It will be observed that various minor changes and modifications within the scope of the appended claim may be made without departing in any degree from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
In a non-refillable bottle, the combination of an annnlar enlargement formed on the lower end of the inner periphery of the neck, a pendant valve seating on said enlargement, a guard comprising a cylindrical member disposed Within the neck and seated also on the enlargement and proi'ided With. a hore for receiving the "valve, means for automatically locking the guard in place upon its insertion in the bottle neck, the intel-mediate portion of the periphery of the guard being previded with a circumscribing depression, the Wall of the guard adjacent the here being provided With a plurality oi vertically extending slots opening upon the depression and the guard being further p reided itli' a plurality of bores extending inwardly from the depression and then upwardly to the top face thereof.
ln testimony whereof, We afliX our signatures, in the presence of two Witnesses.
