" 'HEEL-BREASTING" iuncirnvnn T0 all whom it may 0mm! 1 a Be it known that I,=HARoLD A. SoULIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State;
of New Yorlnwhave invented certain Improvementsiin Heel-Breasting Machines, of which the following description, in connection'with the accompanying drawings, vis a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like partsin the several figures. H
This invention relatesto heel .breasting machines and particularly to the gage or presser plate usually employed in such'ma-, chines to engage the tread face of theheel and serve to position the work and hold it' during the heel breasting operation.
In certain types of shoes, the top: lift or tread portion of the heel is provided with projections, such for example as metallic calks or studs commonly used'in sporting shoes to prevent slipping, and it has been difficult, if not impossible, tobreast such;- shoes on a machine after the heels have been,
attached.
It isthe object of this invention to modify and adapt a machine to breast shoes the heels of which have the characteristics mentioned, or similar ones.
To this end a feature of this invention consists in the novel construction of a presser plate. for clamping engagement with the tread face of a heel which has projections standing above its surface. a
A more particular feature of the invention comprises atread plate having a thick ness somewhat greater than the length of the longest stud or calk to be used, and in the plate holes or recesses extending from its lower side upwardly are formed which areadapted to receive the studs or calks of the heel so that the surface of the tread plate surrounding said recesses may come in direct contact with the tread face of the heel and the heel may therefore be clamped firmly in position during the operation of breasting. The calks are usually arranged in parallel lines extending longitudinally of the heel and accordingly it is preferable to form the recesses of the presser plate as grooves or slots extending lengthwise thereof so that the shoe may be drawnlengthwise from under the plate without lowering it sufiiciently to bring the projecting ends I 2 ofuthe calks 'belo'wthe lower face of. plate, as Is necessary when the recesses are in the form of holes. t
These and otherfeatures of the invention will appear morefully from the following detailed description, when takenin connection with the accompanying drawing and the appended claims.- a
Patented s us, 1914;,
Figure l 1 is a side elevation, partly in I section, of the portion of the breasting machine which supports" the tread plate and shows the relationfof the knife and the shoe tothe tread plate;fFig. 2 is aplanviewof' the plate, the relation of the shoe to the plate be ng'shown in full and dotted lines.
7 Referring toFigxl of the drawing, 2 indlcates' the lower 1 portion of the slide of a breasting machine of the type referred to above which carries the holder for the tread or presser plate. blocka which is pivoted at 6 to-the slide'2 The holder comprises a and is? normally maintained with its upstanding; portion 8 against an i adjusting which is threaded onto a stud 20 extending downwardly from the block 4. A slot 22, Fig. 2, permits adjustment of the plate relatively to the stud 20. The presser plate 14 isprovided on the under side of its forward portion with grooves extending longitudinally of the plate and of the shoe, theslots 24 being open at the forward end. Between the grooves 24 are ribs 26, the lower faces of which lie in the plane of the lower face of the plate l t-and are adapted to engage the tread face of the top lift between the studs extending upwardly from the face of the heel, as indicated at a, Fig. 1. The slots 24 are preferably made wide enough to embrace not only the upper portion of the studbut also the collar on the stud which engages the surfaceof the top lift. 'The forward edge of the plate 14: and the forward. ends of the ribs 26 are beveled off and the ends of the ribs together withthe ungrooved portion of the plate may serve as the guide ,for positioning the heel so that the breasting cut will bemade at the proper point in the heel, it being understood that the plate 14; is'so" adjusted longitudinally 'tion' to provide the plate 1% with holesproperly located to receive the studs of theheel without the grooves 24,. in which case the shoe and plate 14 must be moved relatively vertically to 'a% sufficient extent to free the studsfrom the holes in the plate, so that the shoe may beswung outwardly from beneath the plate 14. j q o Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States -is=:-
,1. A. heel breasting" machine, having, in
combination, atread pl-ate 'holder, and a tread plate secured thereto having "recesses formed to receive projections on the tread face of the heel, said plate beingof a'thickness to space the tread face of the heel away from the holder a distance greater than the height of the projections.
2. A tread plate for heel breasting niai chines adapted for use in breasting a heel the tread face longitudinally of the heel and" opening through the breast end of the plate,'s'a1d recesses being of greater depththan-the height of the projections.
3. In a machine of the class described for ,breasting heels having projections thereon, the combinat on of a holder and a member for applying pressure to the tread surface of the heel being breasted comprising bearings adapted to extend longitudinally of the heel between the said projections and to apply pressure to the surface ofthe" heel when the holder is forced toward the heel and to permit retraction of the heel longitudinally from beneath the member when the pressure is released. t
4. A tread plate-tor machines for breasting heels having projections extendingli'rom their tread faces, comprising a plate with recesses extending along the tread face of ,the plate longitudinally of the heel and opening through thebreast end of theplate.
, In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of subscribing witnesses.
