CHOPPING-MACHINE.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, LOUIS F. NEWSOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chopping Machines, of which the followingisa specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in chopping machines and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use for blocking out rows of plants and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be readily and conveniently assembled and operated. v
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combinationiand arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attainedand, the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a chopper constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, with certain of the parts shown in section; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation of certain of the parts as shown in the preceding views.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a frame of suitable configuration having mounted in the forward portion thereof the transversely directed shaft 8, on the extremities of which are affixed the traction wheels 22 whereby it will be per ceived that such shaft 8 will be caused to revolve in unison with the rotation of the wheels 2. Suitably affixed to the shaft 8 intermediate its length is the beveled gear 3 which is adapted to mesh with the beveled gear 4 suitably aflixed to the extremity of the longitudinally directed shaft 9, the gear 3 being of such a size relatively to the gear 4 as to cause such gear 4 and the shaft 9 to Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Sept. 1, 1914:. Serial No. 803,239.
which it is aflixed to travel twice to make twocomplete revolutions upon one complete revolution of the axle 8.- The axle 9 is mounted in suitable bearings 22 carried by the frame 1 and projects a predetermined distance rearwardly of such frameand has iitsouter extremity directed through the intersecting portions of the bars 13 depending from the rearwardly directed handles 12 and secured thereto through the medium of the clamping members, herein shown as bolts 1-1 and coacting nuts 16". The lower extremities of the handles '12 are operatively connected with the upper extremities of the straps l1 projecting above the frame 1 a predetermined height by the bolts 14 and coacting nuts 16", while their lower extremities are operatively clamped to such frame through the medium of the coacting bolts 15 and: nuts '16.- 7
Fixed -to the rearwardly projecting portion of the shaft 9 through the medium of the clamping; members 21, are the "spaced,
spiders 5 to the arms of which are secured, as at 19, the inner extremities of the arms 6, the outer extremities of such arms having suitably secured thereto, as at 20, the cutting blades or hoes 7 disposed transversely on an incline or tip, as shown in Fig. 3, sufiiciently to leave clearance for the heel of the hoe or cutting blade so that the machine may be employed with greater convenience.
As is thought to be self-evident, the rear portion of the machine is supported by the bars 13 which have their lower extremities formed to afford the rearwardly directed contacting runners 13 and in order to prevent the intersecting portions of such bars from slipping from the shaft 9 I suitably aflix to the outer extremity of such shaft 9 the collar 17 which serves as a stop to prevent the bars 13 fro-m passing therefrom. While any means may be employed for maintaining the gears 3 and 4 and the collar 17 against displacement, I prefer to employ the clamping elements 18, herein shown as conventional set screws. As my improved machine is caused to advance along a row of plants, the hoes 7 will be caused to rotate transversely of such rows and strike the ground or row of young plants at predetermined intervals and thus cutting out certain of the plants and leaving the remainder in blocks. As herein disclosed, my machine is particularly adapted to be employed in connection with beets. To further brace the handles 12 and to maintain the outer extremities thereof in proper relation, I interpose therebetween the cross bar 10, for a purpose and in a manner which is believed. to be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a chopping machine constructed in accordance with an em bodiment of my invention is ofan extremely simple and. comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use byjreason of theiconvenience and facility with which-it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obviousthat my invention is susceptible of some change and modification; without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason; I do not. wish tobe understood as: limiting myself; to the precise are rangement and formation of the several parts herein shown incarrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
1. A device of thecharacter described in:-' cluding a wheeled frame, handles extending therefrom, intersecting bars depending fromthe'handles and having their lower extremities bent to form runners to contact with the surfaceover which the device isadapted to the shaft whereby such shaft may be caused to revolve upon rotation of the wheels.
2. A device of the character described ineluding a wheeled frame, spaced straps projecting upwardly. from the frame, rearwardly directed handles operatively connected to the upper extremities of the straps, intersecting bars depending from the handles and! having. their lower extremities bent to form rearwardly disposed runners to contact w-ith the surface over which the device isadapted to be drawn, a shaft rotatably supported by the frame and the intersecting portions of the bars,.chopping blades operatively connectedto the-shaft rearwardly of the frame, and: an operative connection betweenthe supporting wheels and the shaft whereby such shaft may be caused to revolve upon rotation of the wheels.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
