Specification of Letters Patent f Patented Sept*.1,19'14.
Application filed nines, 1913. Serial No. 771,233.
useful Improvements in Sawing-Machines;-
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to machines for sawing wood into short lengths, such as used for firewood; and it, consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts. I
tween the arms and the guides 3, and ophereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a sawing machine constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section, taken on the line w-00 in Fig.2. Fig. 1 is a section I through one of the guides 3, taken on the line g -g in Fig. 1.
The machine is provided with a supporting frame 2 of any approved construction, and two pairs of guides 3 and 1 for the saw holders 5 are secured to, or built into, the said frame. The saw holders 5 extend longitudinally in the guides, and their rear ends are pivoted to the upper ends of levers 6 by pins 7. The lower ends of the levers 6 are pivoted to the frame by pins 8. A crankshaft 9 is journaled in the frame andis provided with a handle 10 and a fly-wheel 11, or other suitable driving devices, for revolving it. Its cranks 12 are arranged at a right angle to each other, and are connected to the levers 6 by connecting-rods 13. The saw blades 1A are secured to the front ends of the saw holders 5. The front guides 3 have vertical chambers 15 in their uprights, and 16 are plungers which are slidable in the said chambers. A crossbar 17 is pivoted to the plungers 16 by pins 18 and projects through slots in the uprights. The two saw holders rest on the tops of the plungers, which project above the tops of the chambers in which they are slidable vertically.
A hand lever 20 is pivoted by a pin 21 to one of the guides 3, and extends crosswise of the machine. A cord 21, or other flexible connection, is secured to the lever 20 at one end, and passes over a guide sheave 22 at the top of the guides 3, and has its other end secured to the crossbar 17. A pin or stop 23 is provided on one of the guides 3 for the hand lever to engage with when depressed. This stop supports the saw blades in a raised position as shown, and when the lever isdisengaged from'the stop the saw blades can descend upon the wood to be sawed.
Curved arms 25 are provided and are'pivoted in bearings 26 on the top of the guides 3. The front ends of these arms 25 have forked portions 27 which engage with the saw blades, and 28 are springs arranged beerating to press the saw blades downwardly. A V-shaped, or channel-shaped, support 30 for the wood is provided, and is secured,
35 issecured to one end of the crankshaft 3 1 and affords a means for raising or lowering the hook 32.
The wood is held in the channel of the support by the hook which is depressed so as to clamp it, and the saws are lowered .rrnn it onto the wood, and are reciprocated by means of the crankshaft 9 The saws are pressed on the wood by the springs 28, and
as'the. crossbar 17 is pivoted to the plungers and supported by a single cord, the saw blades balance each other to some extent in cutting.
The frame 2 is portable, and the machine can be moved from place to place. For this purpose the frame is usually mounted on wheels or runners, which are not shown as they are of any approved construction.
VVhatI claim is:
In a sawing machine, the combination, with two guides provided with hollow uprights having slots in their adjacent sides, of two saws slidable in the guides above the hollow uprights, plungers for raising the saws slidable in the hollow uprights and In testimony whereof I have aflixed my projecting from their. upper ends, a crosssignature in the presence of two Witnesses. bar pivoted at its opposite'ends to the two plungers and Working in the said slots, and MATTHEW SCHAMANN' 5 means for raising the plungers simultane- Witnesses: ously connected to the middle part of the O. J. PAULSON, crossbar. JOHN M1111.
