Description

JOHN M. LEONARD, OF MARSHALL, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 110,924, dated January 10, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
.The Scheule xefen'ed to in these Letters 1=atent an maklngpart of the same.
To ll'whom it may conccrn.:
. Be it known tliat I, JOHN M. Lnoxan, of the cily v of h'farshall, in tlie coniity of Oalhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and usciul Improvenientin Plows; and I doh'ei'cbydcelare thatthei'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description oftlie same, reference being had to the aunexed drawings making a part of this specification, in which niy invention is sliowii iii perspectivc, sutiieicnt of the main .plo\\', to which il; is an adjunct, being exhibited in broken lines, to indieate the connection and relation between the two.
My invention rclates to an improvemcnt in the setl and arrangement of the parts constituting the small plow, called a jointcl', attachcd to the beam forward of'ihe main plow, .said jo'utcr, as ordinarily used, making 'a small furrow iii advance of the principal one, aiid operaling in connection witli the main plow, as in the subsoil arrangcinpnt.
deep plowing, but to sliee away a strip next to land,
and turn it oi'er to the right on the top of the l'ui'rowslicc, to he turned by the share and mold-board oftlie i'en, nn ol' the niold-lmard, sueli slice from the main om' as il'tit is being turned over to the right.
Jf`or this purpose I employ a Cutting-share, A, and a mold-`` iard, B, somewhat resembling a left-hand 'd the left or land-side, and separate, by the iiitt'rplow divesied of its land-slim, uiid the upper edge of ihn share made i'hin und sli ii'p.
i`lnniold-hoard forms a part or continuai'ion of the slaudard or sliunk shown at b, which conneots it with the main ploir. und the share is connected iiush to tln` inold-houi'il by coiniiei'smik hcaded bolts, as usual. i or about the point where the standard merges iii the iii-ohl-hoard, i form a twist in such a inaiiner ilnit the mold-hi'ard'and share-faees will lie at such suitable angle willi the ground surface as will best enahle the eut g edge a of ihe share to poiietrate and ;-li'' \v 1h'` soli in the most easy an'd eilieient manner.
l usiially '.i'nst|-uet the combined standard and inohl-hoard in east-iron, and the eutting-share of plate steel, or of iron i'aced with steel; hut i'or some soils it inny be best' to make the mold-board and share in one piece of steel plate, cut and swaged to the proper eoniiguiation.
In case of very rank surface growth, I sometimes increase virtually the depth of the mold-board, by the' erection of a roilcr, as sliown at D, provided 'with a bottozn flange, said roller turning freely on a pivot holted through its bottom tang to the back side of said mold-hoard, so that when not required it may be readilyremoved.
I find it best to continue the mold-board cnrve across the share, so that the left-hand furrow-sliee may be promptly turned, and, in regard to the connection with the main plow, I will say here that I do not dcsire to be confined to connecting my improved jointcr to the beam, for I am inclined to believe that niiiic may he more desirably connected near the shin, somewhat as shown by the red broken lines.
If connected at the point justnamcd the cuttingshare and mold-board might be more reafiily adj listed at auydesired angle with the ground surface, and the l projection of the jointer from the main plow sensibly As is well known the jointer is not einployed for i diminished.
The operation is :is follou's:
.\s the plow moves along the share and mold-board A B cut and turn a small furrow-slice to the left,
holding the separated herbage, stuhble, &c-., from falliugr on or mlxing with that on the main furrow-slice that is being turned to the right or plowed land.
.'Xt the succeeding plowing the jointcr iin'i'ow-slieo will lie along the right edge of the main sliee to be turned, and will be eovered up at Ithe bottoni of the main i'ui'row previously made.
The words right and left heretofore used apply only iii the case of right-hand plows. In the case of a left-hand plow my jointer would, of course, bc so relaiivel y arranged as to turn the small furroiv-slice to the right.
Aly invention differs from others used for the same purpose iii this: That while it causes the surface growth to be completely and effectively covered up, the combined action of its sliare `and mold-board A tends to estahlish au equilibrium of latcral pressure, and greatly aids the ploughrnan in making a straight furrow of uniform depth.
Ilaviug thus'descrihcd my invention,
What claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is this The combination with each other, and with a plow,
of the `jointer-share and multi-board A B, when cmploycd either with or without the roller I), and constructed, arranged, and connected substantially as and for thc purpose set forth.
"itnessesz JOHN M. LEONARD.
