Be it known that I, TnoMAs G. PLANT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented an Improvement in Connection-Cutters, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. i
The invention to be herein described relates to boot and shoe machines, and more particularly to machines for truingup and leaving in proper shape the heel and shank edges adjacent the heel breast, and com-; monly known as the heel connection;
When the breastof a heel is cut down, using a concave cutter, thevarying width of the heel at the breast produces a curved or irregular .breast-li11e at the side edges of the heel, the irregular projecting edge being nearer the toe ofthe shoe at a point next the shank than at a po nt nearer the tread sur- 1 face of the heel. It is also difficult to prowhich will best be made clear by the foll0wing description and accompanying drawings of one form or embodiment of means for carrying the invention into practical effect, it being understood thatthe invention is not circumscribed by the described and illustrated details, but, is definitely pointed out by the claims.

.The machine frame may comprise a supporting column 1 rising from a suitable base and having mounted on the top portion thereof a frame or head 2 to provide suitable supporting and bearing means for the.
moving parts, as will hereinafter appear. Supported in suitable bearings on the machine head isa main driving shaft 3 having usual fast pulleys 4, 5 which may be actuated from any suitable source of power.
Inasmuch as the machine is designed to act upon the heel and shank edges at both sides of the shoe by similar means, the present embodiment of the invention contemplates a twin machine, that is, one part to act upon one edge of a heel and shank at one side of the shoe, and the other duplicate part to act upon the other edge of the heel and shank.. f:Fig. 1, therefore, shows such duplicate or twin formation, and in describing the present embodiment ofthe invention one of the twinor duplicate parts will be referred to, it being understoodthat the other is a substantial duplicate. Secured to the driving shaft 3 is a cam 6, Figs. 1 and 2, bearing upon which is a roll 7 carried by a knifeactuator 8, Fig. 2, preferably formed as a lever pivoted on the stud 9 upon a suitably supporting bracket extending from the machine head and normally under the influence of a spring 10, one end of which is connected to the lever 8 at 11 and the other end to a pin 12 projecting froma part of the machine head.

preferably formed as a plate and having its hub portion provided with a series of teeth 2d, Fig. 3, adapted to engage the collars or teeth on an adjusting screw 26 screwthreaded into the heel rest carrier 22 and provided with a milled head 27whereby the adjusting screw may be manipulated to change the angle of the heel rest in a manner as will be readily understood.
The heel rest carrler 22 is mounted to slide in suitable ways '28, Figs. land 5,
formed on the machine head 2, and is; adjustably connected by a slot 29 and ad usting bolt 30 to an arm 31 pivoted at "32 to alink 33 jointed at to the upper end of a lever 35 fulcrumed on the stud 9. The lever 35, thus orotherwise connected to the heel rest 23, is normally'maintained in'position with the heel rest projecting 'well to the front or'toward the operator by a spring 36, Fig. 5, one end of which is connected at 37 to the said lever 35 and the other end toa fixed 'point'on the machine head.
It will be evident from the construction described that, if aheel S be placed against the heel :rest and forced backward, the

This knife, see Figs. 1, 2, 4L and 6, is preferably carried in suitable ways l5 formed in a knife head 46, said knife d4 being clamped in adjusted position by a set screw 47. Extending in proximity to the knife edge is a guard 48 properly secured to the head, as at 49. The lower end of the pin 41 is-provi'ded with a nut 50, Fig. 6, for confining the sleeve 42 in place on said pin.
From the construction described it will be apparent that the shank knife carrier or arm 43 may be turned about the rock shaft 39 as a center and is normally held in depressed position by means'of a spring 51, Fig. 6, secured at 52 to a projection 53 extending from said sleeve and having-its other end 54 connected to the upper portion of an ad usting screw 55 which is passed through a bracket or lug 56'entending from the machine frame, said adjusting screw being provided with a nut 57 below the bracket to properly adjust the tension of the spring 51. To limit the action of the spring, the bearing 38, Figs. land 6, is provided with a stop 58 which'is adapted to be engaged by a coacting stop 59 formed on the hub portion40 of the pin d1. Pivotally mounted at 102 on the sleeve 42 carrying the shank knife carrier or arm 43 is a vibrator arm 103, thepurpose of which is to vibrate the shank cutting knife 44 and cause it to remove the edge 99, Fig. '3,-fro1n the shank of the shoe sole. Mounted on the end of the vibrator arm 103 is a roll 104 adapted to bear uponthe cam portions 101 of the disk when said roll 104 is depressed into position for such engagement, as will presently appear. Connected to the vibrator arm 103 is a spring 105, Figs. 1 and 6, which normally acts, to hold the roll 104 against the face of thedisk 100. p
Pivotally connected at 106 to the vibrator arm 103 is a treadle rod 107, Figs. 2 and '6, pivotally connected at 108 to an arm 109 fixed to a shaft 110 mounted in suitable hearings on the machine frame. Projecting from the shaft'110 is an arm 111 connected at112 to a treadle rod 113, whereby upon depression of the treadle rod by the treadle 114 the shaft 110 may be turned in-its bearings and the rod 107 pulled downward to force the roll 104 of the vibrator arm 103 into the path of movement of the cam projections 101 on the disk 100, the construction iso shank cutting knife44 will be vibrated in a direction. longitudinallyof the shoe shank.
As hereinbefore pointed out, the guillotine knife makes one cutting excursion and returns to initial position andlthen stops, regardless of whether the shank knife car-' rier or arm 13 is still held in raise'd'positiou' by the shoe or not, but, shouldthe shankknife carrier or arm 48be lowered and then raised, the guillotine knife would again start on its excursion and probably interfere with the operation of cutting the edgeof the shank portion of the shoe or do other dam-l age. The present invention, therefore, contemplates means operative upon giving to' the shank knife 1st its vibrating cutting action to lock or hold the shank knife carrieror arm 13- in its raised position and conse quently prevent actuation of the guillotine knife. As one means of carrying this feature of the invention into effect, the hub portion of the vibratory arm 103 is pro-' vided with a recess 115, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 0, and the sleeve 12 is provided with a pin 116 engaging said slot 115, the
construction heinosuch that upon depres sion of the rod 10!, as hereinbefore pointed out, the vibrating arm would be turned about its pivotal support 102 as a center and bring the wall of the slot 115 at the left of the pin 116 into contact with said pin, thereby holding the sleeve 42 and consequently the shank knife carrier or arm t3 in the position indicated in Fig. 6, that is, with the shank knife carrier in the raised position to which it was originally forced by contact with the shoe. Upon depression of the treadle 114- to cause vibration .of the shank cutting knife 4% it is desirable that the heel rest 23 and thebreast gage 83 be moved from their'position, as indicated in Fig. 3, so that the shoev may be freely turned or manipulated by the operator. To this end the lever 35, Fig. 5, has a depending toe'portion 117, Figs. 2 and 5, which is in the path of movement of an adjusting screw 118 carried in the endof an arm 119 mounted on the shaft 110 and consequently movable with said shaft upon de-'- pression of the treadle rod 113, the construction being such that upon depression of the treadle the lever 35 will be moved to the right, Fig. 5, and consequently withdraw the heel rest 23. The-arm 109, Fig. 2, has passing through a perforation in the end thereof a rod 120 having disposed between the nut 121 threaded to its lower end and the end of the arm 109 a spring 122, said rod extending upward and provided with a slotted end portion 123 which engages a pin 12lprojecting from the arm 91, the construction being such that upon depression of the treadle 114- and consequent downward movement of the arm 109, Fig. 2, the rod 120 will be depressed, thereby depressing the arm 91 and causing its slot 96 to act upon the pin 97 and cause rotative movement of the shaft 86 and consequent movement of the breast gage 83 away from operative position.
From the construction described as one embodiment of the present invention it will be apparent that the edge of the heel exten'ding from the tread portion thereof to the shank at thebreast line will be first trimmed by a clean reciprocatlng out of the gulllotine knife, said knife being started into actuation by movement of the shoe into operative position; and subsequently thereto the shank cutting knife is caused to actuponthe shank edge in front of the heel breast by a vibratory cutting action, the guillotine knife being held and locked out of possible opera the claims.
l/V hat is claimed is:
1. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a knife for cutting the edge of a heel breast, a knife for cutting the edge of the shank in front of the heel breast, and means for causing said knives to act successively.
2. In: a machine of the character described, the cen'ibination of a heel rest for supportthe tread surface of a heel, a knife for cutting the edge of a heel breast, a knife for cuttingthe edge of the shank in front of the heel breast, and means for causing said knives to act successively.
3 In amachine of the character described, the combination of a heel breast gage, a knife for cutting the ed 'e of a heel breast, a knife for cuttingthe edge of the shank in front of the heel breast, and means for causing said lniives to act successively.
4-. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a heel breast gage, a knife for cutting the-edge of a heel breast, a knifefor cutting the edge of the shank in front of the heel breast, means for causing said'knivcs to act successively, and means for moving the breast gage away from the heel during the action of the heel edge knife.
5. In a connection cutter, the combination of a heel rest for supporting the tread surface of the heel, a heel breast gage, said heel rest and breast gage acting to position the heel for treatment, and a cutter for acting on the edge of the shank in front of the heel breast.
6. In a connection cutter, the combination of a heel rest for supporting the tread surface of the heel, a heel breast gage, said heel rest and breast gage acting to position the heel for treatment, a cutter for acting on the edge of the shank in front of the heel breast,

9. 10. In a connection cutter, the combination of a heel rest to engage the tread surface of a heel, a breast gage to engage the breast of a heel positioned on the heel rest, a cutter for acting on the edge of the heel breast, a cutter for acting on the shank in front of the heel breast, means operative on movement of the last named cutter to actuate the first named cutter, and means to move the breast gage out of position during the action of the heel edge cutter.
11. In a connection cutter, the combination of a heel rest to engage the tread surface of a heel, a breast gage to engage the breast of a heel positioned on the heel rest, a cutter for acting on the edge of the. heel breast, a cutter for acting on the shank in front of the heel breast, means operative on movement of the last named cutter to actuate the first named cutter, and means to move the heel rest and breast gage out of position during the action of the shank cutter.
12. In a heel connection cutter, the combination of a cutter for acting on the breast edge of a heel, means for reciprocating said cutter, a cutter for acting on the shank in front of the heel breast, and means for vibrating said last named cutter.
13. In a heel connection cutter, the combination of a heel edge cutter for actlng on the edge of the heel breast, a shank cutter for acting on the shank edge in front of the heel breast, and means controlled by movement of the shank cutter into operative relation With the shank of the shoe for operating the heel edge cutter.
14. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a knife for cutting the edge of a heel breast, a knife for cutting the edge of the shank in front of the cutter.

19. In a connection cutter, the combination of a heel edge cutter to act upon the edge of the heel breast, a shank cutter toact upon the shank in front of the heel breast,

In a connection cutter for boots and shoes, the combination of a heel edge cutter to act upon the edge portions of a heel breast, a shank cutter to act upon the shank of a shoe in front of the heel'breast, means controlled bymovement of the shank cutter for causing the heel edge cutter to act, and a lock to prevent simultaneous action by both cutters.
25. In a connection cutter for boots and shoes, the combination of a heel edge cutter to act upon the edge portions of a heel breast, a shank cutter to act upon the shank of a shoe in front of the heel breast, means controlled by Work induced movement to cause the heel edge cutter to operate, and treadle-controlled means for causing operation of the shank cutter.
26. In a connection cutter for boots and shoes, the combination of a heel edge cutter to act upon the edge portions of a heel breast, a shank cutter to act upon the shank of a shoe in front of'the heel breast, means controlled by Work induced movement to cause the heel edge cutter to operate,treadlecontrolled means for causing operation of the shank cutter, and means to prevent concurrent cutting action by the tWo cutters.
