Be it known that I, ALBERT B. `HANCOCK, a citizen .of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in'the county of Dubuque and State ofy Iowa, havev invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
lThis invention relates to new and useful improvements insad-irons, and more particularly to internally heated sad-irons.
An object of this invention is the provision of a sad-iron comprising an opel top body of the usual conformation of sad-irons,
the body having a detachable cover connect-v ed thereto, and the cover carrying a fastening means for engagement in the body to secure the cover in close the open top of the body.
-A furtherobject of this invention is the provision of a sad-iron which comprises a wit-bin the body hollow body open at its upper end, and a detachable cover vada ted to partiallyclose the upper endof the upwardly projecting arms at its opposite ends upon which a handle is mounted, and the cover being provided with an insulating plate disposed between the handle and the upper face of the cover to protect the hand of the user of the iron.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a sad-iron hollow body which is open at its upperl end, the body carrying a grate `on the bottom thereof which is adapted to support carv bonaceous fuel which is to be burned within the body, the body also having draft openings formed in the sides thereof above the plane of the grate, and valve plates piv- @tally connected to the outerl face of the ybody for engagement over the draft openings therein, theiron also including a detachable cover which is adapted to artially close the open upper end of the body so Athat a portion of the y heat generated is allowed to escape.
I'Vith these and 'other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed,

Referring more particularly to the drawing, .the numeral l designates the hollow iron body which is open at its upper end, the body being of the shape of the ordinary sad iron. A. grate 2 is disposed on the bottom of the body, the grate being of a shape to. conform to the curvature of. the body so that rattling of the grate within the iron when the same is in use, is prevented. The side walls of the body are provided with a plurality of draft openings- 3 therein above the plane of the grate 2, the draft opening being preferably arranged in pairs, vand rpiv-- otally connected to the body adjacent each pair of ycfpfnings, is a closure or valve plate 4, the plates frictionally engaging the outer face; of the body so that the same may be adjust'ed over the draft openings to entirely open or close the same or to partially close the openings, the plates being held in adjusted position by reason of their fric-V tional engagement with the outer face of the body. `Formed on the inner face of each side wall, adjacent one end of thefbody, is an inwardly extending pin 5, and a cover 6 is provided, the ycover being adapted to engage the upper edges of the opposite sides of the body, and is provided nat one end with a downwardly offset longitudiengage below the pins 5 to secure one end ofthe cover to the bod The opposite end of the cover 6 is also provided with a downwardly offset outwardly extending lug 8, the lug being disposed slightly below an opening 9 formed in one side wall of the body.
Formed on the upper faceof the lug 8 an apertured block l0, the opening in which registers with .the openings 9 in the side wall of the body, and a locking rod 1l is slidably disposed in the apert-ured block 10 for engagement in the opening 9 to securely lock the cover to the body. Formed on they opposite ends of the cover are the upstanding arms 12 which are provided at their upper ends with openings to receivea handle supporting rod 13 upon which a handle 14 is mounted between the arms 12. Pivotally connected intermediate of its ends to one of the arms 12, is a lever 15, the lower en 'l is connected to `the locking L and the upper end of which is provide with a finger piece 16, whereby the legal may be operated to move the rod 11 into or nally projecting lug 7 which is adapted to loo out of engagement with the opening 9 in the side of the body. tion of which extends downwardly to a point closely adjacent the upper face of the cover so that an air insulating `space is formed between the opposing faces of the baiile plate and the cover.
In the practical use of my improved selfheating sad-iron, the desired quantity of carbo-naceous fuel is disposed upon the grate 2 within the body, whereby the same is lighted, and the cover is secured to the body by placing the lug 7 below the pins 5, and the opposite end of Athe cover is moved downwardly until the under face thereof at its opposite edges engages the upper edges of the side walls of the body, and the lug 8 is disposed below the opening 9 so that the opening in the block l() registers with the opening 9 in the body. It will be seen that the lugs 7 and S are of a width to closely engage the inner faces of the 'side walls at their points of engagement with the walls, so that rocking or oscillation of the cover with relation to the body is prevented. The cover is then securely locked to the body by moving the upper end of the lever in the the proper direction to force the locking rod 11 into' engagement in the opening 9 in the body, so that separation of the cover from the body is prevented. It will be under-l stood that the cover plates 4 may be adjusted over the draft openings 3 to allow the desired amount of air to enter the body, and as the cover is relatively shorter than the length of the body, as clearly shown in the accompanying drawing, the body is open at its opposite ends so that Ithe heat may escape therefrom. The heat from the body 1s prevented from heating' the handle 14 by the face of the'cover, whereby the insulating air space is formed between the cover and the baffle plate to prevent heat from passing to the plates 17 and thence the handle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is
An internally heated sad-iron comprising a hollow body having an open top, a cover mounted on said body to partially close said open top, said cover terminating short of the ends of said body, inwardly extending pins formed on the side walls of said body adjacent one end thereof, a downwardly eX- tendng curved lug formed on one end of said cover for engagement beneath said pins, one wall of said body having an Opening therein adjacent the opposite end of the body, a lever pivotally connected to said cover and carrying a locking rod for engagement through the opening in the side wall of said body, whereby to'lock said rcover to the body.
