To all whom it may concern HERMAN LEINWE'BER, CHICAGO,. ILLINOIS.
AIRSHIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 1, 1913. Serial No. 745,564.
Be it known that I, l'lERMAN LEINWEBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Airships, of which the following is a specification.
My'in'vention relates to an improvement in air ships and especially to supporting planes therefor, and has for its, object, the provision of a plane for air ships of improved construction and operation and especially designed to assist in elevating the ship and in steadying the motion of the ship on an even keel.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings feigning a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l i a side elevation of an air ship equipped with a plane embodying my invention, Fig. 2, an end view of the same, and
Fig. 3, a longitudinal central section taken through the plane.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings comprises a supporting plane 1 which is formedof a frame 2 of any suitable construction and covered by canvas or other suitable material, as will be readily understood by those skilled inthe art. This plane is formed with its longitudinal sides or edges depressed and downwardly curved throughout the main or body portion thereof, thus forming a plane of (-oncavo-convex shape in cross section transversely of its length. At each end the corners b of the plane 1 are upwardly inclined until they attain the same level as the cen tral portions thereof, so that each extreme end of the plane is flat and level as shown in Fig. 2. By this arrangement of the ends of the planes the lifting action thereof, when forced through the air in either direction is augmented, and the travel of the ship on an even keel facilitated.
A suitable car i is suspended from the plane on suitable hangers 5 and suitable propellers 6 areal-ranged in a suitable frame 7 which is in turn braced and supported from car at and from plane 1 by means of hangers or braces 9. Suitable power developing means is arranged in car 4: and suittherefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. An air ship plane concavo-convex in form in its main portion with its longitudinal sides depressed and having its forward corners upwardly and longitudinally inclined, substantially as described.
2. An air ship plane concavo-convex in form in its main portion with its longitudinal side depressed and having its corners upwardly and lon 'tudinally inclined, substantially as descri ed.
3. An air ship plane concave-convex in form in its main portion with its longitudinal sides depressed and having its forward corners upwardly and longitudinally inclined to the same level as the corresponding central'portion thereof, substantially as described.
i. An air ship plane concave-convex in form in its main portion with. itslongitudinal sides depressed and having its corners:
upwardly and longitudinally inclined to the same level as the corresponding central portiOn thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN LEINWEBER.
