for instance, forthe'insertion of the needleand again grasped in-any position for the purpose of drawing it through to make the stitch.
Another objectof the present invention is to provide a simple and efiicient needleholder that may be easily changed to form forceps, nippers or other grasping tools, or
scissors by replacing some of its partsl Another object of the invention is to so construct the instrument that its parts may be easily taken'apart for cleansing and readily replaced for use. I
With these and other objects in View, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in-the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section taken through a surgical instrument, constructed in accordance with the present invention, its parts being'shown in their open positions; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, its parts occupying their normal, closed posi tions; Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 4 is a front elevation of forceps and Fig. 5 of scissors adapted foruse upon the instrument. These members are attached toflone another bya pivot l2', and normally swung open or apart by a spring 13, that is coiled around said pivot and is disposed within and abuts against the inner faces of said handle members. The pivot 12 is attached to the handle member 10 and is adapted tobe seated in a slot 14, that is formed in'the handle member 11, the said slot extending awn angle to the longitudinal axis of the member 11 to prevent a disengagement thereof from the handle member 10 under ordinary circumstances, that is to saywhen the operating handle members are swung not too far apart. To the upper ends of the operating handlev members are attached pivots 15, adapted to be received by slots 16, which are formed in the lower ends of the shanks 17 of a pair of nippers 18. Theslots 16 extend at an angle to the longitudinal axes of'the shanks 17 of said nippers, to prevent "a disengagement of said nippers from the'handle members under or- .dinary circumstances. The two elements of the nippers are connected by a pivot',for in stance a -T-headed stud 19, that is attached to one of saidelements and seated in a pivot hole 20 in theother element, said hole being provided with a slot 20 that is adapted in length to receive the stud '19. By such ar rangement, the two element of the nippers can be pivot'ally locked to one another when the head of the stud is across said slot, and
taken apart when the studhead is in register v with the said slot. v To the head member 11 is secu-red,for instance by 'means of a screw 21, "an arcshaped rack-bar 22. The inner end of this bar abuts against 'the inner face of the I handle member 11, while its outer end projects a suitable distance beyond the same, the center of the arc of said bar coinciding with the pivot 12. To permit the rack-bar to be easily detached from the handle mem ber 11, the latter is provided with a 1ongitudinal slot 23, merging into a circular enlargement 24:, the diameter of which. is slightly larger than that of the head of said screw. The spindle of "the screw is normally seated in the slot 23Iand, when properly screwed up, holds the rack bar firmly in position upon the member 11. WVhen the screw is loosened and the rack-bar shifted until the head of said screw is in alinement with the circular enlargement 24, the rack ber 10, and-is thus disposed within easy bar, together with the screw, can; be easil'y detached from the handle member 11.
