Description

ltion. 1
thrust ndert ELIAS c. EISHEL, or. WHITE HAVEN, rEuNsYLnANIA.
Letters Patent No. 110,869, dated January 10, 1871; antedated December` v31, 1870.
iMPRovEMENT nv DENTAL LATHEs.
The 4Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and -making part of the same.
-To all whom it mayv concern:
@Be it known that I, ELIAs C. RISHEL, of White Haven, in the county of Luzerne and Stat-eef Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improve- .ment in Dental Lathes; and I do hereby declare that thefollowng isla frh-clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to" make und use the same,'ref`erenee being had tothe accompanying drawing forming part-oi this specifica- -"lhis invention relates to improvements'indental lathes, and consistsin an arrangementof the man-A liel and the bearingstherefor,l to' admit ofreadily'. removing the mandrel from the supports,'as isoften required for shifting or chungiugfthe wheels on the malnirel `AFigure l is a side elevation of agpart'ot' a dental lathe;A I
- "Figure 2 is an end View of the same and Figure 3 is a section ou the line x :c ot'fig. l..
Similar letters of 'reference indicatev correspomling parts.
A represents the mandrel; j
D, the supports forthe bearings-,and
For dental purposes it isoften. necessaryftoplace grinding orother disks, or wheels, on the mandrel against the side ofthe pulley O, or in other places between the bearings, and to change them from time to time. 1
I therefore propose to .fit the mandrel with journuls', tapered in part, as shown at a, and make a correspondingly-shaped bearing in one support, as s how'n at-b, and provide an opening, d, through the other bearing support', sc that by n'rst passing the ende ofthe mandrel through the hole at b, from the direc- -tionof the otherbearing, the journal at the end j" nray be passed sidewise through the opening'cl into the hole for the journal, which is made larger 'thanv 'the said journal, for the reception of a bush, D, hav? lnga hole corresponding to the shape of the journal,`and shoved endivise into the hole for it, and along the journal, to bear against the tapered part and force the tapered part, at thel other' end, against its' beary ings, to hold the mandrel against end movement,-.the f' bush being held in position byaset-screw, E.
After the mandrel is put imposition the nuts F .l
are `screwed onto Athe ends of the mandrel; they arei used in connection with other nuts to bev screwedon for clamping disks or `other things on the chiefly screwed ends.
` vTo take the' mandrel ont, the-bush D is first moved ont of the bearing su'pport,'(the nnts'F being taken olii) the end in the notched hearing-is moved out through the notch, and the end, ntf-b.' is .drawn out .the Way it was putin. I may arrange-both the bearing supports-with notches :Zand bushes 1 so as .to take'. both journals without moving the mandrel endwise. i lhe tapered bearing and journal at l) admit of moving the other .end of the mandrel laterally after ,being irstioved endwise slightly','when the bush D' is removed. ,This could not. bedonev 'if' this bearing and journal were cylindrical. Y v 'lhis sleeve, with )the-taperedV hole, and the setscrew for holding it,'m`ayvbe used in connection with the tapered journal of any mandrel," whether arranged l in these notched bearings'or not, for taking-up the slack can-sed by wear','n.nd I propose'to make such lThe nuts are'also intended'to, act as shoulders against the bu'shesin cases when great end pressure oecur's,` so as -to' prevent the'wedging of the tapered bearing with the sleeve whenjexposed to the end pressure, another n 'ut being'put on vand screwed against the'one bearing o'nvthe end of the bush, to
p revent its being turned by the friction ther-eat.-
Hav'ing thus described myinveution,
l claim' as new and desire to secure by Letters i Patente# f 1. The mandrel A, provided with tapering and threaded journals and nuts, as described, in combi.v
nation with the tapered bearing b and sleeve D, the latter arranged in a bearing support, having a notch', d, and set-screw E, as`specilied.
2. The combination, with the bearing support und tbe'rnandrehcf the adjustable bush D and the set# screw E, substantially as specified.
lh'e above speeitication of my invention signed by me this 27th day of April, 1'870.
