JOINT.
To all whom may concern:
itl no-wn that l, WILLIAM P. Ha r-- ew; a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Charlestown, in the countyof Suffolkand State of Massachusetts, have invented an improvement in Joints, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specilication, like .characterson the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to joints for couch beds, hammocks and other structures, and among other objects, providesa strong, effective joint which is simple to construct and cheap to manufacture. i i i The character of the invention mayb best understood by reference to the follow ing description of an illustrative embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a couch bed having. frame members connected by an illustrative joint embodying the invention; Fig. Qis a side elevation of the couch bed shownin Fig. 1; Fig. 3 on an enlarged scale is aplan of portions of frame members disclosed in Fig. 1 showing the joint construction; Fig. i is an end elevation of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 55 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a detail to be referred to.
Referring to the drawing, the joint embodyingthe invention is shown for purposes of illustration in a couch bed comprising a frame including side tubes 1 and end angle bars 3, between which is stretched a mattress 5. The frame and mattress thus formed may be supported by legs 7 suitably connected to the and angle bars 3 referred to. The legs and side bars may be connected by diagonal braces 9. j
Heretofore considerable difliculty has been experienced in providing a cheap, simple and effective joint for connecting the side In some instances rounded surface of the side bar, and riveted thereto. This was a very unsatisfactory construction since a loose pivotal connection was formed which lacked rigidity and pernutted relative rocking of the side tubes and end bars, causing skewing and other distortion of the frame.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application and September 17, 1912. Serial No. T203789.
. provide a Patented Aug.
One of the purposes of the invention isto joint overcoming the above obections. f
Referring more particularly to Figs. 3, 4: and 5, the illustrative joint embodying the invention comprises diametrically opposed terminal slots 11, 1.1 in the tube preferably extending in the direction of the longitu dinal axis of the tube. The angle bar 3 re ferred to comprises two flanges 8 and 3 The former is set into said. terminal slots and the latter faces the end of the tube and partially closes the same. The slots and flange are preferably of substmitially equal extents so that the edge 3 of the flange may bear against the ends of the slots 11, 11. To secure the flange 8 in the slots 11, 1.1 a
bolt, rivet, or other means 13 may be entered through said tube-and flange 3 transversely to the plane of the latter. By the construction described, the edge 3 of the angle bar flange 3'" bears against the ends ofthe tube slots, which, being spaced a distance equal to the diameter of the tube, offers a twopoint bearing for resisting relative rocking of the tube and bar in their plane. This is further assisted by the rivet 13 which socures the angle bar flange in the slots and thereby holds the edge of the angle bar flange 8 in bearing contact with the ends of the slots. The flanges being fitted into slots of substantial lengths, prevents rocking of the angle bar relatively to thetube trans versely to their plane. Preferably the face of the vertical angle bar flange 3 should abut against the end of the tube but this is not indispensable, since an effective.rock-resisting bearing is had by the engagement of the edge of the angle bar flange 3 with the ends of the tube slots.
In some instances the angle bar edge 3 may terminate somewhat shortof the ends of the tube slots, and in such case the rockresisting bearing is had by theengagemcut of the angle bar vertical flange 8 with the end of the tube. It is preferable, however, to have the bearing engagement between the angle bar edge 3 and the ends of the tube slots.
The jointdescribed is extremely simple to construct, it being merely necessary to form the diametrically opposed slots in the ends of the tube; introduce a flange of the angle bar into said slots; bore registering holes in said tube and angle bar flange; and then introduce the rivet through said holes.
lVhile the bar shown herein as connected to the tube is an angle bar, it Will be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that channel or other bars might be employed if desired.
It will be understood that the joint described is shown in a couch frame for illustrative purposes merely, since it is applicable to many other uses.
Having described one embodiment of the invention Without limiting the same thereto, What- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A rigid joint comprising a tube having at an end thereof a pair of opposite slots extending longitudinally of the tube, a right angle bar having one flange fitting in said slots and extending to the inner end thereof, and having its other flange engaging the end of the tube, and a bolt extending transversely through the end of the tube and through said first mentioned flange, and securing the tube and bar in fixed relation.
2. A. bed-frame or like structure consisting of two parallel side tubes, each of which has terminal slots at each end, extending transversely of the tube, and a pair oftransverse, end, right angle bars each having a flange fitting the slots of the adjacent ends of said side bars and engaging-the inner ends of said slots, said bars each having its other flange extending tranversely of and abutting the said adjacent ends of said tubes, and a bolt extending transversely through each end of each tube and the inserted flange, the said bolts holding the tubes and angle bars in fixed, rigid relation.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscrlbing Witnesses.
