'lhis invention. relates to a. new and useful improved pair of jewelers tongs, and an object of the invention isto provide a device of this nature provided with means, whereby the gripping ends of the jaws may be held substantially rigidly, whether they are close together or far apart.
ln practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
lhe invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the jaws adjusted to their limit and separated. Fig. l is a sectional view on line AMA of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a rear end view of said pair of tongs illustrating the means to hold the jaws in registration.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the jewelers tongs as a' whole, which comprises a pair of duplicate members or blades 2 and 3 riveted or otherwise secured together as at 1l, there being a tongue and groove connection 5 and 6a, to hold the members or bladessquarely in registration. The free portions of the members or blades are designed to be adjusted toward and away from each other, so as to be disposed, in order to pick up or clamp various small articles of jewelry and the like. The adjacent faces of the jaws 6 and 7 of said `members or blades have knurled surfaces 8,
to prevent that which is clamped from slipping. Substantially midway of the length `of each blade or member, parallel opposite faces are provided, designated by the numerals 10 and 11. The surface 11 gradually merges into the outer face of each member or blade at one end, but extending at an angle thereto, as shown, and terminate in a shoulder' 12 atthe opposite end; The inner face 10 gradually merges from the inner surface of each blade` or member, at a juno# tion diagonally opposite from the junction where the face 11 merges into the outer face of each member orblade. Said inner face 10 also terminates in a shoulder 13 at a distance spaced apart from and diagonally opposite the shoulder 12. The shoulders 12 are disposed diametrically opposite one another, but upon the outer faces of said members orblades, while the shoulders 13 are disposed at junctions diametrically opposite, but `upon the innerer adjacent faces of said `membersor blades. A metallic strap surrounds both of said members as shown. The portions 15 of said strap4 16 slide against and engage the faces 11, acting to throw the jaws together, to clamp various articles of jewelry. A transverse pin 17 arranged parallel to the portions 15 of the strap and carried by the strap extend be tween said members and engage the adjacent faces 10, and when the strap is moved in the direction of the arrow al, the pin acting against the adjacent faces 10 canse the jaws to separate, in order to adjust the jaws to grasp other or different sized arti cles of jewelry. WVhen adjusting the strap in the direction of this arrow a the shoulders 12 limit the strap in its movement. However, when moving the strap in the opposite direction the shoulders 13 are contacted with by the pin, thereby limiting the strap in its movement in the opposite direction. In applying this strap, the same, subsequently to its construction is slipped or telescoped over both of said blades or members until the portions 15 engage the faces 11 at the junctions where they merge into the `outer faces of the blades or members, then the pin is inserted transversely of the strap adjacent theshoulder 13, and riveted, in which case the strap will remain permanently until theriveted ends of the pin are led olif.` Said blades adjacent to their riveted ends are provided with depressions 19. to be engaged by the ball of the palm of the hand and one of the lingers in order to attain a grip on the tool, the enlargements at the riveted ends designated by the nu meral 20 preventing the tool from slipping from the hanches shown in the drawings. j
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is :el j
A pair of jewelers tongs comprising a pair of blades riveted together at one end ilo of said tongs, and terminating in clamping jaws at the opposite end of the tongs, each blade substantially midway of its length having diametrically opposite faces parallel to each other, but extending at angles to the opposite faces of the body of said blade, the outer faces of the parallel faces of said blade terminating in shoulders toward the pivot of said blades, the adjacent faces of said parallel faces of the blades terminating in shoulders toward the free ends of said blades, said blades having clampingsurfaces extending from the adjacent shoulders entirely to the free ends of said blades, the inner shoulders being diagonally opposite' the outer shoulders, a strap lsurrounding said bladesl engagingv the outer faces and de signed to be limited in its movement in one direction by the outer shoulders, a cylindrical pin carried by said strap extending transversely thereof and transversely disposed between the adjacent faces and adapted to contact with the inner adjacent shoulders to limit the strap in its movement in the opposite direction, said strap and pin constituting means to hold the aws in substantially adjusted rigid positions between thev extreme` open and closed positions of said jaws, and interengaging elements adj acent the rivet of said blades for holdingthe blades diametrically opposite and in registration with one another.
