Description

0. F. ADAMSON. SPREADER FOR THE LEAVES OF SPRINGS. APPLICATION FILED APR. 24, 1912.
1,108,1 1 1. v Patented Aug. 18, 1914b UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CECIL F. ADAMSON; or EAST PALESTINE, omo.
SPREADER FOR THE LEAVES .OF SPRINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
Application filed April 24, 1912. Serial No. 692,917.
Leaves of-Springs, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention alms to produce a novel tool adapted for use in temporarily spreading apart the leaves of leaf springs, for applying oil between the same, which I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a leaf spring having applied thereto my improved separator. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through said spring, my improved separator bein shown applied thereto in side elevation. ig. 3 is a detail view of one of the wedging members. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View showing a slightly modified construction of the wedgingmembers. 5 is a detail perspective view of the same.
In the said drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes a yoke shaped base, havin mounted in one arm 2 thereof a fixed ivedging member 3, the same terminating in a point.
In the other arm 4 of said base 1 is mounted a screw threaded bolt 5 in threaded engagement with arm 4, and formed at its inner end into a wedging point 6, and at its outer end with a cross bar 7 formanipulating the same. v
In operation the device is applied by positioning member 3 between two of the leaves 8 of spring 9 to be separated, and by similarly positioning the end of the point 6 of bolt 5 therebetween. Upon now screwing said bolt 5 inward, the leaves 8 will be at once forced apart suificiently to introduce therebetween the nozzle of a suitable oil can or other device for the purpose of oiling between the faces of said leaves. The bolt 5 may then be retracted, and the device applied at any other point on the spring.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a slightly modified-construction of the wedging members, the same being shown with elongated engaging edges, instead of the pointed ends of Figs. 1, 2 and 3. With this construction the 'wedging' member 10 carried by screw threaded bolt 5' will fit rotatably therein, be-
ing retained by a pin 11 engaging a groove 12 in the shank of said member 10. 'ith wedging members of this shape a broader area. between thespring leaves may be separated. It will be understood that while the base 1 may be made of cast iron. the wedging members should be made of steel.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patent is:-
A leaf spreader for spreading leaf springs, comprising a yoke, a conical wedge on one arm of the yoke, and a stem threaded into the other arm of the yoke, said stem being provided with a conical wedge and being adapted when turned to advance toward the first mentioned point.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing
