'n PnnAr /r J. Davies, on nrnwn'rnn, p'rnn.
To all whom it mayc n0em Be it known that I, EPHRAIM J. DAVIES, a
citizen-of the United :States, residing at- Hiawatha, in the county of Carbon and] State of Utah, have invented newand useful Improvements in Goal-Pick Sharpeners, of which-the following is a specification.
,7 This invention is an improved coal pick' sharpener or tipper, the object of the invention being to-provide'an lmproved machine of this character bymeans of which a pick after having been heated and :forged to a I point may have the point tipped while the pickis still hot, so thatithe pick may be then tempered and put in oondition for finishing so that all the work required in the making of the pick may be done in one heat. Y. Theiinvention COIlSlStSllitllQ construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :F igure 1 is a perspective view of a pick-tipping machine constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same arranged for use on an anvil. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 isa. vertical transverse sectional view of the.
same. Fig.4 is a horizontal sectional. View of the same on the plane indicated by the line aa,of Fig. 2.
In the construction of my improved pick tipping machine I provide a saddle-shaped base 1 which is adapted to be placed on an anvil such as represented at A, the base of the saddle comprising a plate 2 to bear on the anvil, a depending jaw 3 at one end of 'the plate for engagement with one side of the anvil and a jaw 4 at the opposite end of the plate for arrangement at the opposite sides of the anvil, said aw i being provided with a clamping screw 5 for engagingthe anvil and clamping the machine firmly thereto.
A vertical arm 5 rises from the base plate 2 at'the same end thereof with the jaw 3 and this arm has an opening 6 in its center, at a point just above the base. Said arm 5 has angle arms 7 at its lower end, on opposite sides of the opening 6. Said arms 7 form guides and bear on the base plate 2 and are secured thereto by means of bolts 8. A chopping block 9 is arranged between the guide arms 7 with its inner end in the lower portion of theopening 6, the said chopping block being longitudinally adjustable, and being for this purpose provided with a longitudinal slot 10 in which is a set screw 11,

which set screwwengages athreaded opening with :whic-hthe base ,plate12 is provided. On the rear sideofti'zhe arm 5 isa vertically arranged guide casing 12 which is secured to the ,said arm 5 *by bolts 13 andpis also secured to the jaw 3;by screws 14. This guide casing is open at its upper and-l0werends and serves ito hold and guide a vertically movable block 15 on the front side of which is a knife plate 16, said knife plate being provided at its lower end'with a beveled cutting edge 17. The knife plate is secured to the block -15bymeansof screws 18 and hence may be detached from the block 'to enable the ;kni;fe Eplate ;to the lresharpened or re-. newed. {El e gknife block has a head 19 at its upper end. The jaw 3 has a substantially L-shaped, adjustingand supporting screw 20. secured;tl1ereto,,the said screw eXtending up,
into the lowerportion voftheuguide casing 12 ;.and being provided with an adjustable nut, 21. A cushioning spring 22 is arranged on the said-screw ,and bears on. the nut, the upper end oft-he spring normally extending above the upper end of the screw and normally raisingthe block 15 so .that the knife is held above the chopping block 9f In the operation of my improved tipping machine, after a coal mining pick has been heated and forged to a point, the point is placed on the chopping block 9 and in the opening 6 and pressed rearwardly against the front side of the knife block and the head of the knife block is then struck by a .P n ed ug- 18,1 4- Application filed r ee t r a'ieis. hammer, thereby causing the knife and the finishing so that all the work on the pick is done during one heat.
On the upper end of the arm 5 is a buffer plate 23 which has a flange 24 that bears against the front side of the said arm and is secured by certain of the bolts which also secure the guide casing 12. This buffer plate receives the blow of the hammer after it has been delivered on the head of the knife block.
Heretofore in the manufacture of coal mining picks and other like implements it has been the practice to tip the same on an emery wheel after the pick point has been forged and the pick set aside and cooled, and hence after the picks have been tipped by the use of an emery wheel it has been necessary to reheat them for tempering. By the use of my improved machine picks may be enabling all the work to be done in one heat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. A pick tipping machine comprising a base having an arm provided with an opening, a chopping block for insertion in the lower portion of the opening and to bear on the base, a guide casing on the rear side of the said arm, a knife block movable vertically in said guide casing, a tipping knife on said block and movable vertically across the rear side of said opening and a cushioning spring for said knife block.
2. A pick tipping machine comprising a base having an arm provided with an opening, a chopping block for insertion-in the lower portion of the opening and to bear on the base, a guide casing on the rear side of the said arm, a knife block movable vertically in said guide casing, a tipping knife on said block and movable vertically across the rear side of said opening and a cushioning spring for said knife block, and means to adjust said cushioning spring.
8. A pick tipping machine comprising a base having an arm provided with an opening, a chopping block for insertion in the lower portion of the opening and to bear on the base, a guide casing on the rear side of the said arm, a knife block movable vertically in said guide casing, a tipping knife on said block and movable vertically across the rear side of said opening and a cushioning spring for said knife block, the said arm of the base being provided at its center with a buffer plate.
4. The herein described pick point tipping machine comprising a saddle base to be fitted on an anvil and having means for securing the saddle to an anvil, an arm rising from said saddle base and having an opening in its lower portion and also provided with guide arms secured on the upper surface of the saddle base and arranged on opposite sides of said opening, a chopping block on said saddle base, between the said arms and with its inner end in the lower portion of said opening, a vertically arranged guide element on the rear side ofsaid arm, a knife block in said guide element and having a knife blade to move across the rear side of the said opening and down to said chopping block, and a cushioning spring for said knife block.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
