To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK W. l/VILKIN- SON and FERDINAND ZIGANEK, citizens of the United States, residing at West Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in door locks, and particularly to locks which are adapted for application to automobile doors or the like.
An object of this invention is the provision of a lock of this character by means of which the door may be easily closed without the necessity of slamming the door to engage the latch bar in its keeper.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a lock of this character which is provided with a spring pressed latch bar, the ,lock including automatic means for holding the latch bar in inoperative position against the tension of its spring, when the.
door is open, and also automatic releasing mechanism for releasing the latch bar when the door has been moved to its closed position.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a lock comprising a casing, in which a slidable spring pressed latch bar is mounted, the spring normally forcing the latch bar to its outermost position, the casing carrying a hook which is adapted for engagement in a notch in the latch bar when the same is moved to its innermost position to hold the latch bar in inoperative position aminst the tension of its spring, the casing also carrying a releasing member which normally projects from the casing so that upon closing of the door the releasing member is engaged against the latch plate on the door frame and moved inwardly to release the hook from engagement with ii the latch bar whereupon the some will be moved OHUVttIdlf/ by its spring into engage ment with the keeper opening in the latch plate.
\Vith these and other objects in view, our invention consists in the novel construction. combination, and arrangement of parts to he hereinafter more fully described, claimed.
' and illustrated in the accompanying draw view substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a sectional view on the line 4.--4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, the numeral 1 designates a -asing which is adapted to be positioned in the door 2 of an automobile or the like so that the front wall of the casing is disposed flush with the forward edge of the door. Slidably dis posed through an opening 3 in the front wall of the casing is a latch bar 4, the latch bar 4 having a rearwardly extending reduced arm 5 which projects through a relatively smaller opening'6 in the rear wall of the casing. Disposed around the rearwardly extending arm 5 of the latch, is a helical spring 7, one end ofthe spring bearing against the rear wall of the casing and the forward end of the spring bearing" against the rear end of the latch to normally force the same outwardly so that the forward end of the latch projects through the opening 3 in the front wall of the casing.
Pivotally mounted upon a. pin 8 which is secured at its opposite ends in the side walls of the. casing above the upper edge of the latch'bar 4 and adjacent therear end of the casing, is a hell crank lever 9, one arm 10 of which extends forwardly of the casing in a substantially horizontal position, and the free end thereof being hookedas at 11, the hooked end of the arm normally engaging the upper edge of the latch 4. The
other arm 12 of the lever 9 extends upwardly within the casing adjacent the rear end thereof for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described. The. outer side wall of the casing is provided with a horizontally disposed elongated slot 13 through which a laterally extending pin 14 is disposed, and the outer end of the pin carrying a knob '15 by means of which the latch bar ma be moved inwardly of the casing. A note 16 is formed in the upper edgeof the latch bar intermediate of its ends, so that upon inv; a rd movement of the latch bar, the hooked end 11 of the lever 9 moves downwardly into the notch 16 to hold the latch in its innermost position against the tension of its spring 7. Projecting through an opening 17 in. the front wall of the casing above the opening 3, is one end of an automatic latch releasing member. the releasing member comprising a bearing shaft which is form-ed t -ro coman angular bracket is 20 Elemental sections 18, each of the sections eing enlarged at one end as at 19, and being formed forwardly of the enlarged portion 19 with a reduced substantially se '-ci rcular extension 20, the reduced portion of each member forming a shoulder 21 at its "juncture with the enlarged portion 19 thereof. When the sections 18 of the member are placed a ainst each other, the curved portions 20 form a journal for the reduced interme e portion 22 of a roller 23; and to hold the sections 18 of the bearing member in engagement with the roller, 'a helical spring 24 is mounted upon the inner ends of t e sections, the spring extendin normally from the enlarged portions 19 of the members to their inner ends. rovided, one end of the bracket extending helow the bearing member in parallel relation therewith, and having an apertured extremity 26, the apertured extremity 26 communicating with an opening in the front wall of the casing, for the reception of a screw 27 upon which a nut 28 is disposed, so that upon turning of the screw in the proper direction, the nut 28 is moved forwardly upon the screw against the inner face of the down-turned extremity 26 to hold the same against the front wall of the casing. The other end of the angular bracket 25 extends vertically within the casing, and is provided with an opening therein, the upper extremity of the vertical arm of the bracket being slidably disposed in a slot 29 in the upper wall of the casing, It will be readily seen, from the drawing, that the spring 24 bears at its forward endv against the enlarged portions 19 of the sections 18 of the bearing member and at its rear end ""against the vertical portion of the bracket 25 to normally force the roller 23 outwardly of the casing, the outward movement of the roller bein limited b the engagement of the shoul era 21 wit the inwardl extending lugs 30 formed on the opposite side Walls of the opening 17 in the front wall of the casing. To normally force the hooked arm of the bell crank lever 9 downwardly against the upper edge of the latch 4, a spring 31 is provided, the upper end of the spring bein suitably ,connected to the horizontal arm of the angular bracket 25, the lower end of the,spring engaging around an upstandin stem 33 on the horizontal arm of the befi crank lever adjacent its outer end. v v
In the practical use of inyldevice, with the door in closed position, theia'tcli '1- will be extended within its keeper, and the roller 23 will be maintained within the casing by rea- SOll of its engagementwith the latch plate on the door frame; and to open the door, the knob is grasped and moved inwardly to re move the latch \from engagement with its thereby holding the hooked end of the bell crank leverupwardly against the tension of its spring 31, and upon pulling the other end of the door outwardly by the knob 14, the roller 23 will be forced to its outermost osition, thereby allowing the spring 31 to fbrce the horizontal arm of the bell crank lever downwardly to engage the hooked end 11 thereof in the notch 16 in the latch to hold the same in its inner position against the tension of its spring 7. When the door is again closed, the roller 23 engages the latch plate on 'the door frame, and is moved inwardly thereby so that the inner ends of the sections 18 engage the upper extremity of the vertical arm 12 of the bell crank lever moving the same inwardly and moving the horizontal arm thereof upwardly so as to remove the hooked portion 11 out of engagement with the notch 16, thereby allowing the latch 4 to move into engagement with its keeper by reason of the expansion of the spring 7.
From the above description, taken in coninwardly of the casing when the same engages the latch plate, as the latch in oul'im proved device is normally maintained within its casing when the door is in 0 en position.
Having thus fully described our inven-. tion, what we desire to secure and claim by Letters Patent, is
1. A door lock com rising a casing, a spring pressed latch sli ably mounted in the casing, automatic means for holding the latch. in inoperative position against the tension of its spring, automatic releasing mechanism slidably mounted in the casing, said releasing mechanism consisting of a shaft comprising two sections, each of the sections being provided with a semi-circular extension, a roller having a reduced intermediate portion engaged between the semi-circular extension of the sections of the shaft, means for holding said sections of the shaft together to secure the roller therebetween, and incans'lornormally forcing said shaft out- Wardly of the casing, the inner end of said shaft being disposed in alinement for bold ing the latch in inoperative position, whereby upoh inward movement of the roller the latch is released.
2.
