T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, /VILLIAM Sornmnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Braking Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to braking devices and it has for its object to provide a track brake of simple and compact structure that shall engage both the top and sides of a rail and be adapted for effective operation to in sure an exceptionally eliicient braking action.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, a sectional elevation and a side elevation of a portion of a crane body equippedwith a brake which embodies my invention.
Referring to the drawings, my invention is shown as applied to a crane having a body 1 and truck wheels 2 that are support ed and guided by rails 10.
The braking device comprises a magnetizable contact block 11, having a substantially T-shaped section, suspended by springs 20 from a cross rod or bolt 12 that forms a part of the frame body 1, a pair of similar contact arms 18 and 1 1 which. are hingeconnected to the ends of the cross member of the magnetizable block and contact shoes 15 which are detachably secured to the lower ends of the arms 13 and 1-1. The arms 13 and 14; are provided with bifurcated lateral projections 16 and 17 to receive the lower ends of arms 18 and 19 which are attached to the end frame of the crane and project downwardly therefrom.
The bottom of the T-shaped block 11 is adapted to engage the top of the track rail 10 and the shoes 15 are adapted to engage the sides of the track rail, the arrangement of parts being such that, under normal conditions, the block 11 is held out of engagement with the rail by the springs 20, and the contact shoes 15 are slightly separated from the sides of the track rail by the action of. gravity.
The brake may be applied by the energization of an electromagnet 21 which surrounds the body of the T-shaped block 11 and sets up a magnetic flux through the Specification of Letters Patent.

i track rail 10, the arms 13 and 14 and the body of the block. When a magnetic circuit is so established, the contact block is forced into engagement with. the rail in. opposition to the pull of the springs .20 and the shoes are drawn toward each other into engagement with the sides of the rail.
While the weight of the block 11 and the parts which are attached to it is borne en tirely by the springs 20, the longitudinal movement of the block relative to the end frame of the crane body is limited by the projecti ns 18 and 19 which engage the lateral projections 16 and 17 of the arms 13 and 1 1, as above indicated. Consequently, when the braking device grips the rail, the tendency of friction to effect longitudinal displacement of it will be opposed by the projections 18 and 19 of the crane body. The upward movement of the block 11 is limited by adjustable set screws 22.
It will be understood that the structure of the braking devices may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore desire that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
1 claim as my invention:
1. A rail brake comprising a magnetizable member adapted to frictionally engage the top of the rail and having lateral projections, contact shoes pivotally suspended from the lateral projections and adapted to make frictional engagement with the sides of the rail. and a win ding for actuating the brake members.
2. An electrically operated. rail brake comprising a main member adapted to make frictional engagement with the top of the rail and auxiliary members adapted to make frictional. engagement with the sides of the rail.
8. The combination with a supporting frame, of a brake member adapted to engage the top of rail, springs for supporting said member, brake members pivotally suspend ed from said spring-supported member and adapted to engage the sides of a "ail, a winding for actuating said brake members, and means for preventing longitudinal movement of the brake members with reference to the supporting frame.
