Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
application 1aed Mai-'ch 1, 1913. serial No. 751,606.
To all .to/0m t may concern.'
Be 4ituknown that I, HORACE P. FARRING- TON, citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Tools, of which the following is a specifica- This invention relates to an improved instrument suitable for use by machinists, mechanics, engineers or the like.
The primary object of the invention contemplates the provision of a compact, simple and inexpensive device which combines the advantages of a square, wire gage, thread calipers and wrench.
- Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a tool of the above character which is simple in construction and,
reliable in operation, yet fully capablel of serving the purpose for which it is designed. A further object of the invention is to several tools or instruments comprising my invention are mounted, the tools being disi posed in relation to the said square, in such a novel and peculiar manner as to provide a neat, compact and useful device.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the followin'" specilication and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hcretoand forms a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which :---v
Figure 1 is an elevation ot' an instrument or device constructed in accordance with my invention. llig. 2 is a transverse sectional view ltaken through the stock ot' the tool, the blades being shown in. elevation, and the plates being inclosed within the cut-out or recess provided therefor. Fig. 13 is a fragmentary view illustrating the connection between the wrench head and the square stock. rig. 4 is an elevation of a poi-tion of the tool, showing the construction of the bevel gage, and Fig. 5 is an elevation of a moditied forni of wire gage.
Proceeding n ow to the description of the cilit-ated.
drawings wherein is illustrated the pre# fer-red form of my invention the numeral 1 designates the stock of an ordinary trysquare, to one end of which is secured in the usual manner, a blade 2 provided with graduation marks 3 designating inches and the fractions thereof. An elongated aperture or opening 4 is formed within the blade for the purpose of measuring wire of various, size, as one edge of the said aperture is provided with graduation marks as shown at 5 whereby such measurement is greatly fa- Pivotally mounted within t-he stock l, through the medium of a pin 6 are a plurality of plates or blades 7 the edgesv gage, bevel gage, Sheet metal gage, rule, Q of which are .provided with screw-thread gages 8, formed within the plates 7 near the ends thereof. )ne edge of the plates 7 has formed'tlierein a plurality of cut out porl tions 9, the saine varying in size throughout the several plates employed in connection with the invention, thereby forming a wire `or sheet metal gage, thel purpose of which provide an ordinary square, upon which the is obvious. A cutout portion or recess 10 is y formed within the stock 1, the said plates 7 being pivoted therein and adapted to normallv fold within the said recess when not `in use, the pivoted end of the plates being rounded as atll to facilitate the opening and closing of the plates as desired. When folded within the recess, the blades 7 will -i in no way interfere with the application of the tool for the various other purposes for which it is designed, the blades being so arranged as to permit the withdrawal of one blade at a time for determining the pitch of the screw thread in question.
U pon the opposite end of the stock 1 from thc blade 2,1 provide a wrenchhead 12, the same being adj ustably mounted in alinement with the stock by means of a longitudinally extending exteriorly screw threaded stem 13 fitting within the said stock and extending throughout a portion of the length thereof7 the said head 12 being loosely mounted upon the stem 13 so as to slide independently thereof. A head 14 is formed upon one end of the said stem and isI adapted to tit within a recess lsformed within the Wrench head 12, whereby a-turning of the said head '14 will permit separation of the jaws of the wrench formed by the inner face 16 of the head and the outer end 17 of the stock. A rule 17', either formed integrally with or secured to the head 12, projects from one edge thereof and is fitted within a longitudithereby forming an eiicient twist-drill or retaining the rule in y nally extending slot 18 formed Within one face of the stock 1, the said rule 17 having a iiange 18 formed upon each edge thereof and extending throughout its entire length, the flange fitting within the said recess 18 for roper place and guiding the same during tie opening and closing of the wrench head 12. The provision of the rule 17 permits use of the device as calipers for determining the diameter of pipes, rods or similar articles, the said articles fitting between the faces 16 and-17 after proper adjustment has been obtained by the manipulation of thehead 12;
A bevel gage 19 having a straight edge 2O is pivotally mounted upon the stock 1, near the intersection point of the said stock and the blade 2, such pivotal mounting being created through the medium of 'a thumbscrew 21. By loosening the screw 21 the gage 19 may be swung so as to bring the straight edge 20 at variousvangles indicated as at 22 upon the stock 1. Lateral adjustinent of the gage 19 is permitted by reason of a slot 23 formed within the said gage.
' Referring now to the modification shown in Fig. 5 the elongated aperture 4 of the preferred form is dispensed with and the blade 3 0 in'the modification is provided with a pluralit of apertures 31 varying in size as 'desire each aperture designating the size of the wire or twist-drill acted upon,
wire. ga 'of the above character.
It wi be seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying-'drawings that. the several tools 'or instruments comprlsing my invention lare disposed or formed upon the tryrsquare in a neat, compact and highly eiiicient manner; and that the several try-square attachments, when folded, occupy but a' minimum amount of space.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings com- Having thus fully describedmy invent-ion,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l A tool including a body portion having a longitudinal groove formed in one face thereof, a rule strip fitting said groove, said strip being adjustable longitudinally relatively to the said body, a head portion integral with the said strip, the latter serving as a means preventing movement of the head laterally independently of the body, an eX- teriorly threaded shank operating within a threaded bore therefor extending longitudinally of the body and in parallel spaced relation to said groove, said shank extending through anA opening therefor Within the said head, and a knob formed upon the shank, said knob operating within a recess of the head to adjust the head and rule relatively to the body, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE i. FARRINGTON.
