Description

'tntmi grant J'AMEs E. REED, on LAFAYETTE, INDIANA;
Letters Patent No. 110,678, dated January 3, 1871i.
'IMPROVEMENT lN CH'URNS.
The Schedule referred toxin these Letters .':faterit and making part of the sante.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. REED, of La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Ohurn; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in whichlhe figure is a perspective view of a churn and rocking-chair, connected for joint operation.
My invention has for its object to provide an iinproved means for operating chui-ns, to render the process of churning less laborious and tedious; and to this end It consists in the method of applying an ordinary .locking-chair to a churn, .whereby the motion of the chair in rocl'iing shall operate the churn, as ,will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- A is the body of a churn ot' ordinary or suitable construction, mounted upon a base or frame-work, B, which extends to one side of the churn for the reception of an ordinary rocking-chair, C.
l) is the elmrn-dasher, stepped at its lower end in4 the bottom of the body A, and pivoteil at its upper end in a bent arm, E, aiiixed to the cover F oi' the churn, as shown.
Gr G are two arms aflixed to the front and rear edges of the chair-seat, and extending parallel to each other over the churn, upon each side vof the churndasher. f p
To the outer ends of the armsfare secured cords, H, which are wound in reverse directions round the shaft of the churn-dasher.
By this arrangement of the cords H and Varms G, i
with reference to the dasher and chair, the movements of the latter in rocking rotate the dasher alternately in opposite directions with great rapidity.
The rockers of the chair rest upon two wide parall'el strips, I, of the base, and are prevented from displacement by being notched transversely, the notches iitting over the transverse barJ of the base, as shown in the drawing, at every motion of the chair.;
The dasher is readily removed from the churn for cleaning, dto., `by lifting off its upper bearing with the cover.
lhe extension-arms G are adapted to slide within loops K, aixed to the lower edge ot the chair-seat, and when the chair is used simply as a rocker and not applied to the churn, are pushed under the seat ont4 of the way.
By my invention it will be seen that the process of churning butter can be easily performed by any person sitting in a rocking-chair without employing their hands in the operation.
Having thus described my invent-ion,
That I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, isv l. The combination-of the sliding arms G and cords ,y
