Description

L. H. OTTO. MR'H FOR PHONOGRAPHS, APPLJUATIDN FILED MAY 13,1911.
fi, MM
Patenm i LGU'IS E. OTTO, OF CEIDhR MILLS, MINNESOTA.
IBR/AXE FDR ."E'HONGRAPHS.
Be it known that L Louis H. Ofr'ro, a citizen of the 'United' States, residing at CcdhrMil'lsgin the county of Meeker and State o*- Minnesota, havel invented new and useful Imrn'ovements in Brakes- ;t'or Phonographe, of which the following .is a specification'.
An objectl of the invention is to provide a brake for phonographs, tor automatically' stopping` the operation ot Vthe phonograp i whenA the reproducen needle has reached the end of the record;
My device is adaptable ton phonographs using either disk or cylinder records and-ernA bodies among' other *features ineans tor engagement with the controliing'l'ever and the reproducing arm of the machine, whereby the lever will be actuated to stop theA opera tion. of the machine when the needle attached to the reproducer ot' the reprod'ncer arm has reached the end ot' the record.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a rod connected nt one end to the reproducer arm of the n1achine,n sleeve pivotally connected to the other end of the said rod, and a second rod adjustahly inounted in' the said sleeve, the said second rod being adapted to engage the controlling meansV ot' the phonograph.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constitutingl a part of this specification, in which Similar characters of reference denote correspoinling parts in all the views, and in whichn Figure l is a perspective view of a phono,- graph showing' my device attached thereto, parte being broken away to disclose the underlying structure. Fig. 2 a plan view of a phonograph record showing a groove provided lon the upper Surface thereof and, adapted to receive the needle 'of the phonograph therein.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a rod l0 having a clamp 1l formed at one cnd thereof for connection with a reproducer arm 'l2 of a phonograph 13 and ivotall'y mounted o n the other end of the rod l0 is a sleeve lll, the other end of the said sleeve being connected to a chain .l5 and adapted to Slidahly receive therein a rod '16. The other end oi' thc rod i6 is connected to acontrolling lever '19 of the phonograph 13 and has an end of the chain 15 connected thereto. A record 20 having the usual sound producing lines formed thereon is adapted to he disposed on the phonographl ySpcei'tat'on of Iiettcrs atent. appnanmmea'ney is, 1911. semi Nb. messe.
PaftentedAug. 1, 1914.
in the usual manner and the said record is provided with al groove 21, formedI at the inner end oi". the sound producing lines as shown in Fig. 1. The usual sound' reproducingr needle 2Q is attached to a reproducer 23 secured to the arm 12 and' when the Said,
needle 22 is movedY to operate over the sound producing lines of the record 20 it is adapted to be received in the groove 21 as will be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
'.ln the operation of the device described, the arm 12 when in normal position will be `arrangeai so that the needle 22 will lie adjacent the outer edge ofthe record 9.0 so that when the record is rotated,the needle will he advanced over the sound producinglines toward the inner portion or nucleus of the record, it being understwd' that the controlling lever 1E) must be disengaged from the ueual dish' supporting the* record and r which imparts rotation thereto in order that the disk cany rotate and impart rotationito ,the record so that the arln 12 will swing toward the center of the record as the needle is advanced over the sound roducing lines.
Now it will be seen that wien the arm 12 swings inwardly the rod 10 will swing rearwardly, the said rod being rigid withl the amr and, in consequence thereof, a pull will he exerted on the sleevel 14 which, connected to the rod 1G hy the chain 15, will impart a pull on the rod 1G when the chain 15 becomes taut`l` the chain 15 being so adjusted with respect to the sleeve 14 and rod 16 that at the moment the needle reaches the end ot the sound producing lines on the record, the pull on the rod 16 will be suiiicient to actuate the controlling lever 1i) and stop the rotation of the record. It will, therefore, he
eeen that the length of the chain 15 can he readily adjusted and will assunie its maxiinuin tension when the needle 22 reaches the inner end ofthe sound producing lines of the `ecord, und it will he further understood that. the outward sliding movement of the sleeve relatively to the rod will result in the chain bccominlr taut to exert the required pull on the ro( 16.
From the foregoing dcscriptionit will be seen that a device is provided for automati cally stopping the rotation of a record when the needle has reached the inner end thereof and it will he further vSeen that a suitable ndjustmcnt of my device can he accomplished so that the saine can be used in connection with various Sized records.
