I a alt whom it may concern lie it known that l, FlL-\NCIE- J,'CULX\J, of tile ienectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a ceri new and useful lmprovement in Drift- 1 '-Valves for liocoinotives, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My present invention is an improvement upon that for which Letters "atent ot' the nited States No. 1,0S9,S0+l, were granted and issued to me under date of March 10, 1914, and its object is to cil'ect a simplification of the mechanism set forth therein, whilc attaining, with equal etl'cctiveness, the same result of automatically admitting a limited quantity of steam, directly from the boiler, to the valve chests and cylinders of a locomotive engine, during the periods in which the locomotive is f drifting, or running with its throttle closed, in order to pre vent the formation of a vacuum in the c vlindcrs, and lubricate them to prevent oven heating and wear of the parts which are in frictional contact.

In the practice of my invention, I locate in any convenient position, preferably, as
shown, within the cab of the locomotive, a
diaphragm chamber, 2, which is in the form of a short polar section oi? a sphere, and is open at its bottom, across which there extends a flexible diaphragm, t, which is secured, at and adjoining its periphery, to he chamber, 2, by a cover plate, 5, having one or more air admission openings, 5*, and connected to the chamber by bolts, 5", and nuts, 5 The joint between thediaphragm and the chamber is hermetically sealed, and the co er plate prevents distortion'ot the dia- 'ihragm, in the event of the accumulation of pressure in the chamber, when the locomotive is working under steam. A steam supply chamber, 6, and a steam delivery chainher, 7, are formed centrally in the upper portion of the diaphragm chamber, 2, and are separated by a partition, 8, in which there is formed an opening controlled by a hollow double seated steam supply valve, 9, of the puppet type, which closes downwardly, or in the direction of the steam delivery chainber, on seats formed in the partition, 8, and in the bottom of the delivery chamber. In the operation of the aupliance above described, when the locomotive is drifting and a partial vacuum is formed in the valve chests and communi-ating steam supply pipes, a corresponding reduction of pressure,

When the throttle is opened for the purpose of working the locomotive under steam, the diaphragm, t, is depressed by the boiler pressure acting on the valve, 9, and said valve-is seated, thereby cutting off the independent supply of steam and returning the parts to the normal position shown in Fig. 2. Leakage of steam into the diaphragm chamber is prevented by the valves, 15 and 15 and any water of conphragnr chamber is discharged therefrom through the drain passage,'17. The check valve, .9, prevents the vacuum in the diaphragm chamber from being broken when the locomotive is drifting.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a drifting valve appliance for locomotives, the'combination of a diaphragm chamber communicating with a distribution valve chest, a flexible diaphragm closing one end of "said chamber and subject to atmospheric pressure on its outer side, a valve con.-
trolling the supply of steam from the boiler to a valve chest independently of the main throttle valve, and means, interposed between said valve and the diaphragm, for unseating said valve by the direct action of the upward movementjof the diaphragm induced by the formation of a partial vacuum in the valve chest-and diaphragm chamber.
2. In a drifting (alveappliance for locomotives, the combination of a. diaphragm chamber communicating with a distribution valve chest, a flexible diaphragm closing one end of said chamber, and subject to atmospheric pressure on its outer side, a valve controlling the supply of steam from the boilerto a valvechest independently of the main throttle valve, and an operating stem, interposed between and adapted to hear at opposite ends on, said valve and the diaphragm, and directly transmit upward movement of the diaphragm, induced by the formation of a partial vacuum in the valve chest and diaphragm chamber, to said valve.
3. In a drifting valve appliance for locomotives, the combination of a diaphragm chamber communicating with a distribution valve,chest, a flexible diaphragm closing one 'end of said chamber and subject to atmospheric pressure 011 its outer side, a valve controlling the supply of steam from the boiler to a valve chest independently of the main' throttle. valve, means interposed between said valve and the diaphragm for unseating said valve by the direct action ofthe upward movement of the diaphragm induced by the formation 01:" a partial vacuum in the valve chest, and diaphragm chamber, and a check valve interposed" between the diaphragm chamber and valve chest and adapted to seat in the direction of the diaphragm chamber. In a drifting valve appliance for locomotives, the combination of a diaphragm chamber communicating with a distribution valve chest, a flexible diaphragm closing one end of said chamber and subject to atmospheric pressure on its outer side, a steam supply chamber and a steam delivery chamber fixed on the top of the diaphragm cham her, a steam supply valve controlling communication between said supply and delivery chamber, a pipe for connecting the steam supply chamber with a locomotive boiler, a pipe for connecting the steam delivery chamber with a distribution 'valve chest, and an operating stem interposed between the diaphragm and steam supply valve, in line axially therewith, and adapted totransmit vertical movement directly from one of said members to the other.
