To all 'whom t may concern t Beit known that I, J ozsnr Kassa, asub' ject ofthe King of I-lungarypresiding at Sandcoulee, `in the county of `Cascade and State of Montana, have `inverited `certain new and useful Improvements inLife-Boats, of which the followingis a specification.`
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in life boats.`
The primary obj eet of this inventionis the provision of shiftable keel positioned ballast members upon thel hull of a life boat and adaptedfoi' imparting stability thereto.
`A further objectisto provide a life boat with oppositely -positioned longitudinal floats exteriorlyof thehull `and supported by `brackets. terminating in keel portions `for pivotally-mountingshiftable `ballast disks. t
A still .further e object `is to provide `a spring-motor operable life boat having `a serviceable steering device and with opposite exterior longitudinal floats and a plurality of ballast disks pivoted beneath the keel portion of the boat and adapted` when released to automatically assume an operative lowermostposition spring locked in place. Withthese general objects in view and others lthat will appear as the nature ofthe invention is better understood, the same cont sists in the novel combination and arrangement ofpartshereinafter fully described, illustrated in `the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.`
t In the drawings forming `a part of this: application and wherein similar reference; corresponding parts throughout the several views :-Figure 1 is numerals designate a side elevation of a life boat provided with fthe present invention and partially broken away with the ballast deviceshown in dotted lines in its inoperative position. Fig. Q'is a rear elevation thereof. Fig.` 3 is a side view of one of the ballast members with the l hingejoint partially broken away. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view upon` an en-` larged scale taken on` line IV-IV of Fig. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the lower end portions of the clamping supporting strips forming the hinge joint fora ballast member. Fig.` 6 is a top plan view of one of the ballast members in its inoperative position partially broken away and with the supporting strips in section.
Referring more `1n detail to the drawings,
the life boat herein illustrated as provided with the present invention consists of the hull lOlhavinga propeller 11 operated by a i spring motor` 19. within thehull i Specification oflLetters Patent.; Patented Aug.;4,1914. Application nieanayis. 1914. *serial No. 838,724. t t
p and; adapted to `be steered by means `of `a rudder 13 `con-l trolled by the steering wheel 14. within the pilot house 15 forwardly positioned upon the deck 16 of the boatg The boat isalso provided with oppositely-hinged skylight frameslT which ,may be `either provided withglass panels or with ventilatingrscreens 1S formed of such material as fabric." The said frames 17 are adapted for swinging on` the hinges 19bywhich theyare connected to the deckand are locked closed by means of turn buttons E20.` t l A `trap doorQl is positioned adjacent the bow of the boat `and through the deckthereo f f (n'wardly of the pilot house 15 whileF a similar door22 is pivotedto the deck rearn wardly of the skylight frames 17, `both of said doors 2l` and 22 being normally retained` closed by means of engaging sprlngs 28 `and Le respectively.
sitely positioned exteriorlyof the hull10 and substantially surrounding the same and provided at opposite points slightly beneath the gunwalespof the hull with circular brackets Q6 adapted e for mounting t hollow tubular buoys "or floats 27 which `extend therethrough and are thus positioned lon-` gitudinallyupon opposite sides ofthe hull and in the same horizontal plane. The
from the horizontal to thevertical position,
the said extension 34 is irstresiliently-received between thespringlugs 33and pass? and in abutting" `engagement withthe stop lugs 32 as best illustrated in Figa. A cnl `lio ingthe same seats therebehind and between l
