Description

C. A. THORSLEND.
RAILWAY SAFETY APPLIANGE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY19,1013.

CHARLY A. THoRsLEND, or" BnnwYN, ILi'iIlvoiis.`
`InarLvvaiz SAFETY APPLIANCE.
To all whomi't may concern:
Be it known `that I, CHARLY A. Tnoiis Liann, a citizen of the United States,.and a resident of thecity of Berwyn, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have `invented certain new and useful Improvements in: .Railway SafetyiAppliances,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway safety i appliances and more particularly to devices which operate in conjunction with signaling devices or semaphores to cut oli' power from a locomotive or other means furnishing motion to a train.
The object of this improvement is to provide a simple device of the character mentioned which will effectively cut off the power from a train or car when the signal ing device is set in a position indicating danger, and be in inoperative :positionwhen the signaling deviceis in its clear position. s
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a broken portion of a railway equipped with my device, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a view taken on line 3-3 in Fig. 1, and Fig.` 4 is a section taken on line 4 4: in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction `as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a railway of conventional construction made up of rails 5 and cross ties 6.a Certain of the cross ties 6 are extended be yond others to afford a base for the signaling and tripping device included in the construction. Situated on two of the extended ties 6 is an upright post 7 carrying a signaling arm 8 and constitutes a signaling device or semaphore now in conventional use. The signaling arm 8 ofthe semaphore is operated by means of a connecting rod 9 which extends downwardly through post 7 and connected with one arm of the bell crank lever 10. The other arm of bell crank lever 10 is connected with a connecting rod 11 which extends to a tower, or other place from which the semaphore is operated, not shown. The connecting rod 11 is extended :beyond the semaphore to a tripping device which embodies my invention. This tripping de- Specification of Letters Patent. vice consists of a stand 12 uponzwhich is secured a head 13. The head 13iis provided with an opening in one side through which is slidably mounted a member 14. Said member 14 is provided with a slot15 at its inner `end and the slot 15 engaged by one arm of a bell crank leverrlll.` Thebellcrank lever 16 is pivoted inhead 13'and has fits other arm connected by means of a connecting rod 17 with a second bell crank lever 18 which is pivoted at thelower end of stand 12. The other arm of bell crank lever 18` is connected with connecting rod 11 in a;
manner to be operated simultaneously with the signaling arm 8 of the semaphore. Po-
sitioned at about the same distance `from the semaphore as the Signaling device already described is a second signaling device made identical with the one already mentioned and connected with the connecting link 11 in the same manner. The second signaling;`
device is provided so that a train, not shown, running over rails 5 from either direction will be operated on by a member 141`at a given distance from the semaphore. l.
In the construction shown the connecting rod 11 extends to the switchman.s tower, not` shown, but it is understood that any form of means may be used to operate the semaphore which is desired. In case other means are used to operate the semaphore the connectingrods 11 are used to connectthe bell crank levers 1S with bell crank lever 10 in order to cause simultaiiieous operation of the two tripping devices upon opcrationof the signaling device or semaphore. i
l/Vhile I have illustrated and described the :preferred form of construction for carrying y y my invention into e'fl'ect, this is capable `of variation and modification without depart ing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope ofthe appended claims.
Having` described my invention what I claim as new and dcslre to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a signaling device; a stand positioned at a distance from said signaling device; an elongated member slidably mounted in said stand and having one end extending` laterally therefrom and its inner end provided with a laterally extending slot; a
,. 5 2.1Axdevice of the class described comprising a signaling device; a stand' posi tloned atA a dlstancefrom said'slgnallng device.; a power svvitch4 tripping member slid# ablymounted in said stand and having 'a portion extending therefrom, there being a laterally disposed lslot at the inner end of said member.; acrank arm journaled in said` i stand and engaging `saidslot; a bell' crank lever pivoted in said stand; a Connecting rod connecting one arm of said bell crank lever 15 with said crank arm; and a connecting rod eonnectinggthe other arm of said bell vcrank `lever with said signaling device, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iv have signed my 20 name to this specification in the presence of tivo subscribing Witnesses..` L
